I am considering Petroleum Engineering; however, I am wondering what the field will be like in the years to come. Do we have 40 more years of oil dependence? Or, will a PetE degree become useless after a decade or two.

I am not an engineering undergrad, as I attend a LAC. But I could do a joint program after earning a BA, thus earning a BA/BS, 5 yr program (3 as of now), in my major and engineering. Or, I could simply pursue a Master in PetE in the same timeframe. Nevertheless, I do not want to invest the time, effort and money if the field will come to an end (or lose profitability) anytime soon.

Any other insight about the PetE field and the petroleum industry would be welcome.

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated. Thanks.
