Petition for retake Help?

In Fall of 09 I attended SBCC and took a placment test into math 137 which is Pre-Calc that does not require Trigonomatry as a prereq. I didn't take this class in the fall; however, I did transfer into Palomar College in the following spring. I transfered my placement test results into Palomar and they placed me into Math 135 (pre-calc) which requires trignometry which i did not know. I took the class and recieved a C, however I believe with a trignometry background i would have done alot better. Palomar college does not allow retakes with a C grade; however, if they have placed me in the wrong class then does this give me grounds to retake the course. Not only that, but ive tried to sign up for calcus courses at other community colleges which have all denied me because i havent satisfied trigonometry. Your suggestions and help is appreciated.

its one C. just roll with it and do better from then on. It doesnt matter that much

No thank you, I rather have my gpa as strong as possible.

I don’t think you have a chance in your petition. You completed the class and earned a C.
You now own that grade. Also, you can’t base the placement at one college the same as the placement at another college.

You should not have waited until you completed the class and earned the final grade to deal with this situation. It makes you look as though you’re simply grade grubbing and complaining that it’s their fault that you earned a C.

Register for the pre-requisite (Trig). It appears that you would benefit from mastering these math skills before moving on to Calculus at the college level. It’s not a big deal.

You earned that C and it’s yours to keep.

PS–Did you discuss the initial placement into the class with your advisor? Did you relay your concerns to your advisor? If you felt unprepared for the class, did you discuss dropping the class during the add/drop period? Did you discuss withdrawing from the class with your the professor of the class or with your academic advisor? Did you attend office hours? Did you take advantage of the help from a tutor? In the end, you can’t blame the college for your performance in the class. It is what it is—a “C”. Now, take responsibility for your “C” and move on.

Well, then face reality and get straight A’s for the rest of your time there.

You cannot finish the grade, do poorly and then try to change it. If you were struggling, then you drop it or talk to the professor.

And are you seriously trying to take calculus without trig? Trig is basic math, so I dont know what else is missing. You cannot take calc. Thats asking for a D or a F

Well what im saying here is that Palomar placed me into a class that i shouldnt have been in. I did discuss with and advisor that i needed to take trig but they told me that my placement test scores placed me into Pre-Calc. However, I have sent those same scores to other Community Colleges which have all placed me into trig and denied me enrollment into Pre-Calc.

that is what you deal with BEFORE the class. not after. You dont have any credibility to change since you didnt do well. If you told the prof midway you cant do this you might have been able to drop

“Well what im saying here is that Palomar placed me into a class that i shouldnt have been in.”
^Not true. Based on THEIR standards, you were placed in that section of math.

“However, I have sent those same scores to other Community Colleges which have all placed me into trig and denied me enrollment into Pre-Calc.”
^again, different colleges have different criteria for math/writing placement.

If you have to take Trig to move on in your math sequence, then do it.
