This has been discussed over and over with the CC owners. They do not intend to change the format no matter how many letters, petitions or e-mails are submitted.

Remember that USC is now ranked #23 on USNWR, higher than UCLA. It is also one of the top 15 up and coming universities, according to USNWR. It was also the only top 25 university to break the top 15 up and coming list. The oldest and largest private university in California, which is USC, deserves to be added to the Top Universities list.

In the past 10-20 years USC has grown to become a Top 25 University.

@Georgia Girl - I agree they won’t change it based on the number of letters/petitions alone, but they should change as the world around them changes. Perhaps in the past the time was not yet right for USC to be put on the Top Universities list. But hopefully the fact that USC is now in the top 25, the most selective school in LA, and rapidly going up in the standings, will cause the managers of CC (whoever they are?) to rethink their position.

I’ve always had the impression that CC is very biased towards East Coast schools and traditionally “prestigious” colleges. If that’s their MO, so be it. shrugs

@Zelda, I’m not sure if they’re biased towards East Coast schools. To me, it seems their bias is towards schools that were on the USNWR Top 25 list 5 years ago.

They’ve stated that the top-25 list was made a while back and they’ve go no intentions of changing it.

There are often petitions for schools like Tufts, USC, and NYU to be on the list. The fact of the matter is, the list is arbitrary, and they readily admit this. However, if they start changing things, there will be a flood of requests for more changes.

Frankly, I think there should just be the Alphabetical Listing, dropping the two “Top” groups and the Ivy League Sports Conference, but it hardly matters. Why should you care? It’s an arbitrary decision made years ago, and ultimately meaningless.

omg put usc on the list already plx.

Honestly, the list doesn’t really matter. In itself, it doesn’t change how good a university is, and it doesn’t bother me much that USC isn’t on the list. I’d certainly much rather be in USC than all but a few of the unis listed there. What does bother me is that this list may affect how some people perceive certain universities, perhaps leading them to form uninformed opinions. It’s misleading, to say the least.

If CC doesn’t want to name USC as a Top University, then just get rid of the category all together on CC. The Top University list is quite misleading if it is never going to adapt to the times. I personally think that USC could soon outrank my Ivy League alma meter, especially if people could just get over the word “Ivy League.” The students are so much happier and more energetic at USC than most other campuses we have visited, and the campus, academics, admissions counselors, weather, sports, etc. are outstanding. (We are waiting to make comments on the professors, just because my child won’t start there until the Fall.) Plus, USC’s acceptance rate is lower than several schools on the 2011 USNWR Top 25, including UVA, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, and the University of Chicago.

CC should just list all colleges and universities alphabetically, by state, etc. With the competition in colleges now, it is impossible to truly define a list of Top Universities that stays constant into eternity.

^^^+1. Even Yale, Princeton and Stanford, which are so often stereotyped as the world’s most prestigious universities, are now less selective than Columbia. Times change.

I agree anxiousenior. And I agree that USC should be in CC’s top university’s list!

^not lower than Northwestern and UChicago. USC should be in the top colleges category and they should replace Carnegie Mellon. But in the end, this list/category doesn’t define USC and its awesomeness

^Yes, lower than Northwestern.
And agreed, they should totally replace CMU with USC

Add USC. I’ve wondered about this since the day I noticed USC wasn’t onthe list. I’m not an alumnus. But it should be on the list.

seconded! thumbs up for strong school spirit ;DD

Some acceptance rates of Top 25 College in the 2011 US News Rankings Book:

Univ of Chicago #9 - 27%
Northwestern #12 - 27%
Johns Hopkins #13 - 27%
Notre Dame #19 - 29%
Emory #20 - 30%
Carnegie Mellon #23 - 36%
USC #23 - 24%
UVA #25 - 32%
Wake Forest #25 - 38%

@MOM…I can garuntee that your statistics are incorrect. There is NO way that some of the colleges you are listing have that high of acceptance rates. Simply go the the main discussion thread about this years acceptance rates.

one thing to consider is that USC does not participate in ED which effectively greatly increases yield and selectivity during the RD process.
