What’s the average age for other engineering careers? Is 44 high or about average for all engineering disciplines? Just trying to see if the retirement boom that I’ve heard talked about a few times is about to happen or not.

Thanks for posting this, it has a lot of good info. I was quite surprised that about 30% of those that responded from the US have higher than a Bachelors degree. I expected the number to be lower maybe around 20% tops.

when wil u graduate from college?

Chato, why do you think many don’t have masters? One possibility it seems high is that some may have EMBAs, not just science masters?

I would suspect that most PetE’s don’t go beyond a bachelor’s because they learn pretty much everything they need to know on the job.

Here’s the 2010 one: http://www.spe.org/career/salary_survey/docs/10SalarySurveyHighlights.pdf

If you guys know of any more info you want I can probably get it through the SPE website, I’m not sure who else is or isn’t a member of the SPE on here.

Why/how do they get paid so much? Is it because the job is dangerous?

With oil priced high, the potential for profit for oil companies is insane and so usually everyone is taken care of. The guys working on the drill crew (roustabouts, drillers etc.) do have a dangerous job but I wouldn’t say the typical Petroleum Engineer has a dangerous job. However it often can be a different lifestyle than the average engineer.

TXAggie92, now that you’ve brought that up I have a question for you. Would you say being on the executive of my school’s SPE student chapter will carry any kind of weight when applying for jobs? Its not something I’d do simply for my resume, I do enjoy being involved but I’m just curious what oil companies think of good EC’s. Do they matter at all?

I would imagine that any kind of leadership role such as that in a very relevant activity that some employers even require you to become a member of could definitely help. I really have no idea how much it would weigh though.

My understanding has always been:
GPA/Work Experience -> Extracurriculars -> Other stuff

I am looking for an internship, I am senior in petroleum engineering. But I realize that you have to be referred or know someone in those petroleum companies to get an internship. My phone number is 443-813-3018. My email is nagha12@yahoo.fr
Thanks a lot
