I have the choice to go to University of Wyoming, Montana Tech, or New Mexico Tech for petroleum engineering. I'm having a hard to time to choose between the schools.

NMT- has alot of federal funding and access to federal labs; I wasn't able to see the labs here and can not determine if it is that great of a program due to lack of info.

Montana Tech- just built a humoungous building for petroleum E and geology, I also like the professors the best there;however, its freezing cold (can get 40 below)

UW- has $2 mill coming in every year for petro E and has the state of the art equipment; however, the school doesn't have a reputation for petro

I've visited all the schools but really don't know which one will benefit me the most in my career Can someone give me some advice and help me decide.

thank you

University of Wyoming isn’t accredited by ABET… unless I’m blind and missed it. So they’re knocked out immediately as far as engineering goes. ABET accreditation is critical.

So its down to Montana and New Mexico. I would choose New Mexico.
-There was thread on here a while back talking about how underrated they were. I’ve never looked into New Mexico specifically, especially for petorleum, but have heard only good about them.
-And I’m no expert or anything but I like to consider myself moderately educated about the engineering field when dealing with colleges. That being said, I have never heard of Montana and engineering go together. I know I’m from the East Coast and all but that is a little worrisome.
-Judging from your comment it sounds like your from New Mexico too. If so, then you would get In-State.
-Plus you obviously don’t like cold.

IMO New Mexico is an easy choice.

Is your best choice, in 2009 they were ranked to be the #1 Petroleum Engineering school in the U.S.; being in Texas where the most oil companies are, it gives you a better advantage on getting a job.

New Mexico. They have a nuke testing range there. How many schools can say that?

NMT has a quality program… but a thing to keep in mind is that it has a “gas” focus and some of the majors don’t recruit there.

I don’t know much about Montana Tech, but i do know that it is more heavily recruited.

lol sergiojr ou necro this topic’s over 1 year dead

bumping

1) University of Wyoming’s PE program is NOW accredited by ABET
[Accreditation | College of Engineering and Applied Science | University of Wyoming](<a href=“404 - Page Not Found”>http://www.uwyo.edu/ceas/info/accreditation.html)

2) To get a rough overall picture for job prospects, google BLS which is the bureau of labor and statistics and type engineering and search for “job prospects” or something similar and it’ll give you good predictions.

In Calgary, I know several Montana Tech grads who get hired by oil companies. To be quite honest, petroleum engineering is a specialized field; you should be fine getting a job. Make sure you take summer jobs in between.

Try University of Tulsa, or Colorado school of mines. Both great schools
