Petroleum Engineering Masters

I have received accepts fro UAF and TU Delft (Netherlands). I am awaiting a reoly from TAMU and LSU. Could anyone please helpp me choose between LSU, UAF and TU Delft incase I miss out on TAMU? Does anyone have any idea regarding the internship and placement scene at either of these Universitites? Please help me out here ppl. Thanks.

Do you have authorization to work in the US after graduation or will you need a company to sponsor you?

@noleguy33: No I do not have an authorization to work in the US.

So I can’t speak for TU Delft, but internships in the US are going to be a bit tricky. I would look into the rules on getting sponsored by a company. I believe with just a BS degree, it is nearly impossible. But since you are getting a MS degree, the process might be easier. Keep in mind, a company isn’t going to offer you an internship unless they feel like they can get you to work for them fulltime. So, if a company isn’t willing to sponsor citizenship, they aren’t going to offer you an internship. Your best bet would be with a major (Exxon, Shell, BP). I know several foreign students that have gotten full-time offers with majors after completing advanced degrees.

From a purely educational point of view, would you suggest UAF or LSU for Petro. I am asking this as I am thinking of withdrawing my application from LSU.

I think I would make that decision based more on what type of research are you interested in. Have you looked at the research groups at both LSU and UAF? I would imagine, though I could be completely wrong, LSU might focus more on deep water research and UAF on Artic issues.

I would put both schools as mid-level petroleum engineering schools… not much of a difference.

I’m not sure if this would interest you or not, but TAMU actually offers an online Masters in Petroleum Engineering.

You are right. LSU has a well where they are able to simulate deep water drilling. I guess you’ve solved my difficulty here. Thank you.

@stategrad: That is not a viable option for me right now. I really appreciate the suggestion.

@stategrad: TAMU has not notified me yet regarding an admit. If I do get that then college station is where I’m going

LSU attracts many of the large oil companies. I’ve seen Shell, Chevron, Exxon, BP, Oxy, Marathon, and others all recruit there. The service companies also recruit there like Halliburton, Baker, ect. Most of the jobs were either located in the Gulf, or in an office in Houston. AFB would probably be like other posters mentioned, centered around Arctic developments. It would only make sense being that they are so closely located to that
environment.
