Petroleum Engineering Masters

I am in a unique position. I am 26, have a Software Engineering undergraduate degree, and have completed all pre-medical requirements (Organic/Inorganic Chems, Bios, Physics). My undergrad gpa = 3.81, and my GRE = Verbal: 164 / Quantitative: 162 / writing: 5-6? (haven't got it back yet). I have 3 years experience as a Java web developer.

Sending some emails to various schools, I have heard some very depressing responses. Texas Tech stated that they haven't accepted anyone outside of a petroleum engineering undergrad in quite some time. A&M said they have a 10-15% acceptance rate, but I appear not to qualify there since I haven't taken Differential Equations (which I can take if I think my chances are good). It doesn't appear I am blocked from UT Austin's program, but it is obviously highly competitive.

I am thinking maybe the best thing for me to do is pursue a Mechanical Engineering Masters under a mentor/professor who has ties in the petroleum industry and can get me in the door. What do you think? Do I have a chance at UT Austin or other PE schools?
