Petroleum Engineering Undergrad Major

Hi guys!

So I’m a high school senior in Texas, and I’ve applied to the Petroleum Engineering major at the University of Texas at Austin. I know the major itself is very competitive to get into, with only about 93 applicants admitted to it last year, but I was wondering if anyone had any more information on it, especially if you have been admitted in previous years. I haven’t been able to find any general stats for admission into that major, and was hoping someone could help!

Bump.

Hi @chilliums. You can use the magnifying glass at the top right on the UT Austin forum to search for old threads for reference information. Here is an example of one with decent information from a previous year. Note NOT to post on an old thread, but a nice resource to read through them. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/1302855-chances-at-cockrell-petroleum-engineering-p1.html

There was a particularly good example from an admitted student who gave examples of some of his friends (A, B and C) that did not get in.

Good luck!

Anyone heard back yet?

nope

Hey chilliums, I too have applied to the major and haven’t heard back yet unfortunately. Good luck to you.

@grumble00‌ hopefully we hear soon!

Definitely! It just sucks that it takes this long… haha

@grumble00‌ haha yeah, when did you submit your application?

Beginning of October, you?

End of October, Honors app sent early November.

I didn’t apply for honors haha, well good luck to you!

Id like an opinion: where would you say the petro engineering program is stronger? A&M or U of T?

a&M

UT is an overall better school, but A&M and the opportunity it gives to its petroleum undergraduates (think it was 100% job placement for petroleum engineering students in 2010 from A&M) really competes with UT’s PE program. Just an opinion, but I would think UT Austin has a bigger name that employers would recognize, moreso than A&M.

I’ve been trying to weigh out the pros and cons for the last week, but it’s really difficult considering both schools have a great deal to offer. I guess wherever I go, I hope I make the right decision.

Whichever one you go with you can’t go wrong. If I get accepted to UT then I will go there for sure, a&m is my second option. Also, now at a&m you do general engineering for 2 years I believe then you interview to go into petroleum engineering

Anyone heard back yet?

FYI…Students can apply to petroleum engineering at A&M after one semester, if they have the correct classes.
