Petroleum Engineering?

I'm currently a senior in HS. I will have no problem getting into Texas A&M College Station, but my question is: Is Petroleum Engineering a good major to get into? I'm very interested in the Oil Industry and what I've read about the job of a petroleum engineer. Granted, I have no previous experience with the oil industry other than a few relatives who have worked the field as an average worker, but I'm really looking forward to studying it. Other questions would be: Can I get some opinions of the job outlook for PEs? I hear that there is a lot of travel involved for the first years as a PE, How much travel and how long is that period? And my final question would be: Is there a lot of hostility towards so called "newbs" in that particular field?
