Pets in dorms

I'm a junior in high school, and I want to have a hamster. However, I'm leaving for college in about a year, and I'm pretty sure that it'll be coming with me(parents don't have the time). So I was wondering: which college dorms allow pets?

I’ll be attending UVA next year, and we are allowed to bring any pet we want. We can also bring however many we want. This is all as long as they are small, non-poisonous fishes that can live cooperatively in 1 tank. I’ll guess you’re college would be similar. Yes, I’d like to bring my dog, but if my pet is allowed, then other people’s pets are allowed and that could get pretty hectic/nasty/chaotic.

Generally speaking, the only pets allowed are fish. When you decide on your college, they’ll probably send you a housing license with more specific rules. Read it carefully.

Some colleges allow pets that live in cages (you just need to find them).

@caemin: cornell is an example. you can have rabbits, chinchillas, snakes, etc. just nothing poisonous or too big and no cats or dogs. caltech allows you to have cats, and i think maybe MIT too. there ARE schools out there… you just need to google it lol. also for cornell it’s only for a single dorm, not every dorm.

i was thinking of buying a pet at cornell but i’ve changed my mind… not because i don’t want a pet anymore but i think it’ll limit me as chinchillas really are hard to travel with, and i’m going to need to take it home every summer. oh well. no pets for me

^^a lot of the same ones but a little more description.

I don’t think most schools will allow you to have a hamster. If that’s a big priority for you, you’ll want to keep that in mind while doing your college search.

Even if you can have a hamster in your dorm room you are gonna have to really be on top of cleaning the cage out because if you don’t then your whole room will smell like hamster.

Hamsters are nocturnal. Your roommate may not enjoy having to listen to Little Fluffy spinning around in his wheel all night long.

thanks for the replies guys. i guess pets are just difficult for others>.>
