PG Year

My son is in the 11th grade. He has a 4.04 gpa and a sat of 1340. His sport is lacrosse. He has some high D3 offers, but wants to hit a top D1 lacrosse school, maybe IVY league. He is still getting bigger. PG would give him another year to get bigger and improve his SAT. What do you suggest as a few PG schools. Also, when should he apply?

I can’t help with the first part (will a PG year help your child and which schools would be good for lax) but can tell you the process for applying to BS providing there isn’t something different about PG.

Fall - interview/tour campus. Check potential schools to see if current SAT score is in range or if he needs to retake.
Applications are due in January with decisions released on March 10 (most schools).

Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts.

Avon Old Farms in Conn.

Salisbury School.

Andover and Exeter too!
You need to have him start emailing the coaches himself. Emails can be found on the website. You also need to fill or prospective athlete forms.

Is he currently playing for a good private program? The top programs should be working to help with recruiting.

Remember that the lacrosse matters less since it is a spring sport. Decisions will be made by the time the season happens.

I second Salisbury for lacrosse (AOF and Deerfield as well). For any of these schools, besides attending games in person (if you are anywhere close) you can check out their sports schedules and watch the livestreamed games (and of course find highlights on YouTube). And yes, keep in mind what @momof3swimmers says about timing – kids graduating this year signed their letters of intent back in the fall.

good advice, who initiates contact, parent or child? and when?

Much better coming from the child! These schools are looking for independence! I always proofread the emails though. Especially the initial ones.

Good idea. He sent initial emails to all 5 schools mentioned above 2 responded positively. 1 wanted hm to reclassify as a junior, he says no to that. He likes the school where is now and wants to graduTe with those boys. The other 3 must be busy with their lax schedules.
