Pgpa

I heard today that one of the calculations that admissions makes in an application review is PGPA...Predicted GPA. Is that somehow automatically calculated? Is it manually calculated if the school doesn't rank? Above what score is a good one, and what effect does it have in the admissions process? I also hear that applicant's are given a score in the range of 1-5 with 1 being admitted and 5 being denied. The middle 3 ranks go to colleges to get their input.

This information was gleened from reading the proceedings of the admissions review board's investigation into the uiuc admissions process by the way.

Will applicants have access to these calculations, or are they for internal use only, and not available to the general public. I thought it was interesting to go behind the scenes so to speak, and find out a little more about the admissions process at UIUC.

If anyone with a little inside knowledge of admissions could comment, that would be great.

Predicted GPA is based on a formula that uses test score, high school rank (estimated if not provided) and can also factor in course difficulty in high school. Formulas themselves are closely guarded secrects but advisors have been known to show the predicted GPA sheet to admitted students when they come to summer orientation to enroll.

Though I am not sure about the numbers 1 to 5, the colleges can, and some do, have specified levels (which vary both among colleges and annually) for automatic admits that admissions’ computers use to automatically admit those above a threshold. There can also be a probable denial threshold on the low end although file will still be reviewed to see if there are any special factors to be considered. Business generally does not use that process and engineering only to a minimum degree.
