Ph.D in Athletic Training/ Math minor

I know I'm in the wrong section but move it if you want to...

I am a freshman at a community college, but I will transfer to a university (GCSU) in the fall and pursue a degree in Athletic Training with a minor in math. I have read that most ATCs have their masters or higher, but there are not many accredited master's of athletic training programs out there. Would it matter if I either got my masters at a non-accredited university or if I mastered in something like Applied Exercise and Health Science?

Also, I have been debating whether or not to get my Ph.D in athletic training. I know UGA has a good doctorate in athletic training program, but I really want to work in a high school near Atlanta as a full time athletic trainer. I'm pretty sure I can do that with a Ph.D., but will it make my salary that much better than if I were to stop at a masters degree?

And lastly, I plan to minor in Math as stated before, but I would love to get my bachelor's in math so that I can teach high school math while also being the athletic trainer at that school. Can I take the rest of the required math classes to get a bachelors degree while I'm working on my masters in athletic training?

Any help is appreciated:)

Why don’t you just major in math and minor in athletic training? There’s a better chance of getting a job that way.

A Master’s from a non-accredited college will not help you at all. I doubt you need a PhD to be a trainer for a HS. And you need to check the school district to see if PhDs are paid better (possibly not more than a Master’s degree).

Erin’s Dad,

I cannot become an athletic trainer without at least a bachelor’s in athletic training. That is my #1 job choice, not teaching math. It’s just that if I were to work in a high school, I wanted to teach math, but I wouldn’t mind just teaching health or anatomy or something related to athletic training. Also, my school doesn’t have a minor in athletic training.

Thanks for your comments regarding the Ph.D. :)

Is it possible to double major in your school?

pascal,

It is possible, but very rare. I actually thought about that, but it would take me four years to graduate after this year. I would not mind going 5 years, but my workload would be heavy my junior and/or senior years because of the clinical requirements for the athletic training major.
