Ph.D in computer science?

I am curious about the job outlook and the type of job I can get with this degree. Anyone know someone with a Ph.D degree in Computer Science (or related) and their current profession? Moreover, if you are a CS major, what degree are you getting and what are you planning to do with it? I really enjoy the whole aspect of computer science and I would like to work in academia or in industry.

If you want to work in industry, getting a master's degree or PhD in CS seems to be largely a waste of time, at least from what I have read:

Career Guide for Engineers and Computer Scientists

Furthermore, it's not like computer science is a secret. Just buy the textbooks and learn on your own since that is what you would be doing mostly in grad school anyway.

alright, so first i will have to disagree with the last comment. grad school is not about the textbooks. and computer science is much different that "computers". there are millions of people doing webpages and flash and data management, but research is a whole new story.

to answer the initial question: with a phd you have two options
1) academia - either teach or go to a research university and have gad students/head a lab
2) industry - so so many opportunities - i see ppl going to google, intel, nvidia, at&t, startups, nokia, etc....

both of these is where cuttting edge research is done and you are building the future....

and you make good money too
