If I want to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical science field, should I declare my major as pharmaceutical science or biochemistry?
Here’s the pros and cons that I’ve thought of:
PS Major:
Pros
- courses taught in this major fulfill more prerequisite for applying PS grad school.
- gain more laboratory experience in the development of drugs…etc
- specific upper div courses only available for this major
Cons - If I somehow want to become a doctor at the end, the courses taught in this major may not fulfill the prerequisites for Med School.
- Career choice may be limited if I happen to not be accepted into a PS grad school.
Biochem Major:
Pros
- Less courses to take and easier to graduate with a decent GPA
- Has a larger range of career choices in the STEM field.
Cons - Have to take additional classes outside of the major curriculum to fulfill PS grad school prerequisites (longer time to graduate from college or have to pack more units into a quarter and stress out)
- Have very limited touch on the experience in drug design, manufacture, knowledge…etc.
I’ve frustrated myself over this question for about an year, but still can’t decide on which major to declare as. Any suggestions? Thank you!!
