pharmacueticals?

'm going to apply to Cal Poly SLO, but I need to choose a major. I'm thinking about choosing Chemistry as my major. What types of careers can I get with a major in chem? I was thinking about pharmacueticals. What is necessary to get into the pharmacuetical field? Grad school? Med school?

I was told by one of my parents' friends that a major in Chem and a minor in computer science would be a really good combination. What types of careers are there with this combination?

Thanks for your help

Want to do big research, get a degree in Chemestry, or BioChem, and then get a joint Ph.D/MD, and have the Ph.D in Pharmacology or Toxicology. This will allow you to do important pharmacuetical research and drug developement. It is hard work, but if you do well in your undergrad, you can find your self having a free ride in a 7 year accelerated PH.D/MD program.

what are other fields in pharmaceuticals? is it necessary to have a ph.d or a md to be in it?

You need a Phd if you want to go into research. I was a PhamD intern at Abbot labs one summer-only Phd's got to do real work.

what fields are there besides research? and what majors are required?

Pharmaceutical companies have most all the same professions as many other companies: Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, QC, Administration, Finance, etc.

A BS in Chemistry or pharmacology would be a good place to start for many of these, followed by the appropriate graduate study such as an MBA for Sales, Marketing, Finance, or Administration.

thanks for the replies guys

so say I wanted to be a pharmacist and sell medications and what not.. what would I need to do that? bs in chemistry and md? if any of you have links to a site that can help me out further i'd greatly appreciate it!

to hand out pills you need a Pharm.D. You will make more than medical researchers who develope the drug, and more than the doctors who prescribe the drug, while going to school for much less than them. It is one of the best careers for pay and time in school required.

Google "pharmacy school" to learn about the prereqs - it has changed since I was in college, when it was typically a 5 year program, and there were few PharmDs. VT is right to a certain extent, it does pay well for time in school, although many of the best paying positions are the most boring, and the opportunity to own your own business is about gone. At one point a year or two ago around here, some pharmacists were getting BMW leases or big sign-on bonuses as incentives for new hires, these people are definitely in demand.

so would Chemistry be a good major with which i'd have a variety of choices of careers?
