Hiya. I'm currently in High School and was recently accepted to UNC-Chapel Hill OOS. I want to study pharmacy there, so I'm hoping to complete 2 years of pre-pharmacy there and then get into the 4 year pharmacy school. Yeah, that was until I saw this page: Student Body Profile — UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

I get it that UNC only accepts around 20% of its applicants to the school of Pharmacy, but since I won't be a resident, I'll be only 25% of that 20%? Would I need to establish residency beforehand? Oh also, it says that 83% of the students "hold a four-year or graduate degree." Since I'm hoping to do the 2 year+4 year course, I'm guessing I won't have a grad. degree. So I'll be the 13% of the 25% of the 20%? Unless I'm doing something wrong, my chances of getting in are pretty darn slim. Of course, this is just an estimate, but it gives me a general idea...
Oh and another thing, on the Frequently Asked Questions, I found this "The deadline for fall 2011 applications (Phase I and Phase II) is November 1, 2010. This includes receipt of the application fee." So, if I want to go the 2 year undergrad path, I would need to apply a bit into my second year. This would mean I would need to take my PCAT, volunteer, and do a lot of other things to "boost my chances" all in my first year and in that summer.
I'm posting this on CC to see if I'm understanding this correctly D: I was going to choose to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and go into Pharmacy, but if my chances are this slim, I may need to reconsider. Thanks for the help~

It’s almost impossible to get all your pre-pharm requirements finished in two years which is why a lot of people don’t apply until after their junior year or until after they’ve graduated from undergrad. It’s just too stressful trying to cram everything into two years unless you come in with a ton of AP credit and do summer school. If you’re an OOS student, the pharmacy school will consider you OOS… I’m not really following all the percentages and whatnot, but I don’t think it’s so much that you’re going to have a hard time getting in - you’re going to have a hard time finishing all the requirements, taking the PCAT, not killing yourself over everything, etc. If you’re not coming in with a ton of chemistry hours, I would probably space stuff out over three years or so just to give yourself a break.

I have a lot of AP credit I can use at UNC, according to it’s AP chart. So I can probably be exempted from taking some classes. What worries me is going there for two years and then getting flat out rejected to Chapel Hill’s pharmacy school. If I choose to go to UNC, I would have to reject scholarships from other universities that are renewable for up to 4 years. So if I’m rejected from the Pharm school, and end up going to another college that previously offered me a 4-year scholarship, that would really really suck since I wouldn’t have the financial mattress :[ (P.S. These are the schools that only gave me loans as Financial Aid)

Well, I don’t think anything is ever set in stone - I know tons of people who came here hoping to be pre-med or pre-pharm, etc, and then they got creamed by a few science classes and went down other paths. I wouldn’t get 100% set on pharmacy school just yet - you never know what can happen! Not being pessimistic, just realistic. Maybe don’t factor grad school into the equation just yet.
