Pharmacy at University of Michigan or Rutgers?

I live in NJ and therefore the tuition at Rutgers would be half of the cost of U Mich .. but the pharmacy program at U Mich is ranked 5th while the program at RU is ranked 24th .. or was in 2008 .. Is it worth it to go to U Mich and accumulate a lot of debt? Is the pharmacy program at U Mich really that good?

The program at Rutgers is excellent, and a ranking difference of 5 and 24 is not very significant. My advice? Save money and go to Rutgers. You’ll be happy to graduate without looming debt and you will definitely be able to snag good job offers.

Good luck wherever you choose!

I agree w/ smart.cookie’s advice totally. Rutgers has a great program! Also, think of where you want to end up…the East Coast or Midwest. There are so many pharma companies in NJ…great opportunities when you graduate. Good luck to you!

i was in the same boat as you in november but i finally decided to go to rutgers because it’s not too far from home and costs way less than michigan and it’s still a great program!

Honestly, astronautica I coincide with all the above posts because since you’re are instate in NJ it would be advantageous for you to delve into Rutger’s pharmacy program, and save yourself from being indebt at UM. Plus obtaining a pharmacy degree from any institution really doesn’t matter that much these days because you’ll still be competitive in the job market. However if you work in the midwest, UM might carry more weight and vice versa with Rutgers up and down the east coast. It’s all relative to each situation for that matter!

I think the job market for pharmacists is still so strong, it really doesn’t matter where you attend to get a good job.

NJ is Pharamceuticals central. Aren’t Merck, Pfizer and J&J all headquartered within a one hour drive from Rutgers? Actually, if memory serves, J&J is headquartered in New Brunswick.

I would also recommend Rutgers over Michigan in astronautic’s case.

My cousin graduated from Rutgers Pharmacy and he is racking up cash as we speak. Michigan Pharmacy is probably better, and I know people who are in Michigan pharmacy and they are getting paid well even before they graduate. However, Rutgers is known for their pharmacy program, its one of the only things they are known for. So I would go to Rutgers and start making money as soon as I can, if you were accepted into pharmacy.

Hi, I’m currently a high school senior in the same situation. I was wondering where you decided to go to pharmacy school and how happy you are with the decision that you made.

you’ll have to go to Pharmacy school later either way, so go with the cheaper option

this is one of the situations where it doesn’t matter where you go. The skill set is uniform and there’s no individuality in the skillset of a pharmacist anyway.
You will have a stable job that is recession proof but pays mediocre comp that tops out at the high 100s for life.

rutgers has a 0-6 program, while michigan requires pre-pharmacy coursework. I live in NJ and i have heard that rutgers is the best 0-6 program out there
