I'm not going to UF this year but hopefully I'll be able to get there pretty soon. The thing is...at first I was going to go to UCF to just finish my pre-reqs for pharmacy school && then when I'm done I'll go to UF for pharmacy. But after reading the requirements for pharmacy it says that I have to have an AA degree or higher to get in. So I have a couple of questions......

1.) What AA degree (or higher) do most pharmacy students have? I hear a lot of Chemistry and M&M.....which one is better? And how long would it take to earn it?

2.) I know it isn't the same school or anything but has anyone ever taken biology I and chemistry I in the same semester? I heard that it was really hard and that I shouldn't do that.

I took bio 1 and chem 1 in the same semester at UF and did really well in them. Most students who are pre-med or pre-pharm need to take at least 2 science classes for most semesters or else it would take them way too long to finish their degree.

I would have to agree. If you have difficulty with Bio 2010 and Chen 2045 the same semester, you will have trouble getting through a pharmacy major.

It was just that a lot of people were telling me that I was stupid if I were to take bio and chem in the same semester. but I think that I will b/c one way or another I probably will have to some time.

I also have another question:

If i wanted to finish my pharmacy pre-reqs at UCF and then when i was done transfer over to UF for the pharmacy program? I didn’t know if this was possible b/c I still would have to earn an AA degree or higher. Can you do both at the same time? I mean earn an AA and be in the pharmacy program?

Sorry if I sound dumb or something it’s just that I’m a bit confused and what to make sure I have everything straight.

At UF, you have to complete the Pre-pharmacy curriculum in two years, otherwise you have to convert to a 3 year degree program. You could also apply after you get a four year degree as long as you have completed the prerequisites.

So basically…I have to finish the pharmacy pre-reqs within two years. after that i can apply for pharmacy school? but i’m still little confused about the AA degree part. can someone explain how an AA degree works? (like how you get it and the classes and such)

You apply for Pharmacy school during your second year. You would get the AA details from UCF because you will earn it there. But make sure you take all the UF prerequisites included as well during the two years.

xoxo, and AA degree typically includes every single general education class, and every single lower-division course (these are typically pre-req for upper-division courses)

schools can give you an AA once these conditions are met, AA’s are 60 credits

If your plan is to apply to UF pharmacy you must focus to stay on track for Both schools you plan to apply to, so…look at UF’s requirements and other school’s requirement and tailor your plan to work for both if its not exact.

general education classes do not have to match UF’s though.

i’m kind of a special case b/c i’m going into my first at UCF with 27credit hours. it doesn’t make me a sophomore but not really a freshman either. i’ve figured out that it’d take me around 2 yrs to get an AA degree but one of the advisors at UCF said that if I’m going to be at UCF for 2yrs why not make it 3 and earn a B.S. degree M&M or chemistry before i go to pharm school.

i was wondering if i could just get an AA degree at UCF while working on an M&M degree then when i do get an AA degree transfer over to UF to finish the M&M. would that work?

We researched options for a pharmacy degree awhile ago as my daughter was looking into this possibility. All the counsel we got said, you need to pick a degree that you can major in and do something with as there is NO guarantee that you will make it into pharmacy school. It is extremely competitive, especially after two years undergrad. Essentially the deal is that you work on your pre-reqs to pharmacy school in the first two years and then you apply to pharmacy school. A lot of times you won’t be accepted after two years and you will need to continue on and complete your degree, trying again to be accepted to pharmacy school. The best thing you can do is go to the school’s particular website, i.e. the UF website for pharmacy:
[University of Florida College of Pharmacy](College of Pharmacy » University of Florida)

There’s also another very popular website which answers tons of info on pharmacy degrees and other pre-health degrees. Here is the pharmacy forum. Many current pharmacy students are there to answer questions, but you can check extensive archives of questions.
