<p>where do i stand...what could i do do appeal more to admissions officers...would like out of state suggestions</p>

<p>..anyone???</p>

<p>No chance at all at UNC. You have a great shot at UConn. Michigan would be a reach.</p>

<p>hmm..</p>

<p>yeah im serioiusly thinkin about uconn...michigan would be a nice "dream" school if i could pull off about a 2000 u think id have a shot?...oh, and just out of curiousity, why would i have no shot at all at unc? any tips on how to make myself more appealing? oh, and does my location (north east pennsylvania) help or hurt my chances when applying to out of state schools like mich or unc?</p>

<p>^^^^^^</p>

<p>what can i do (aside from sat scores) to make my resume more appealing?</p>

<p>does anyone know what schools offer guaranteed admission into their graduate pharmacy school (6 year pharm.d programs)? do pharmacy students ever travel abroad?</p>

<p>I just posted a pharmacy question for Pennsylvania too -- some of the same schools -- although I'm asking about my kid. I can answer your question about the travel abroad, though. We went to a pharmacy program at the University of Toledo when someone asked about traveling abroad. The response was that the pharmacy program is so structured that it doesn't permit such travel. I don't know if every school would have the same response, but this info may help you.</p>

<p>yeah i figured traveling abroad would be tough, but maybe it could be possible lol...any ideas on 6 year programs? i know wilkes university (wilkes-barre, pa--about 30 mins from where i live has the guaranteed admission), however, ive heard it is getting extremely hard to get a spot in the classes</p>

<p>My kid hasn't looked too hard at Wilkes, hoping for a bigger school. Duquesne has a 0-6 program about the same cost as Wilkes. It has different admission standards for Pharmacy than for the rest of the school, which we understand is very competitive. SUNY Buffalo is an incredible value, but we know a kid who went there as a prepharmacy student and got "weeded out" in the freshman chemistry classes. As we understand it, it's common practice to throw hard science classes at the potential science majors the first year....and this kid ended up changing majors. It's still high on my kid's list, though. He also went to Pharmacy Camp at Toledo, and really liked the school. Toledo only admits kids into Pharmacy School from its own school, so the odds are a little better -- however, there are still more than 2 applicants for every opening. I hear Albany School of Pharmacy is a good bet, but it's another smaller school so I don't know whether my kid would consider it. Ohio Northern is another 0-6 program, but it's very expensive. We heard that they offer a lot of scholarship money, but I don't have any specific info on it. Good luck!!!</p>

<p>How about the 0-6 program at Univ.of the Sciences in Philly? Friend with about 1350 got a scholarship. I think they are rolling admission and are always looking for guys. (30-70% guys/girls)</p>

<p>Good suggestion -- I'll relay it to him right away! Always room for another school on the panic list!</p>

<p>im trying to stay clear of usp...just incase i ever decide to change majors to a non science field</p>

<p>can anyone else help reguarding my admissions chances and resume building?</p>

<p>any pre-pharm majors out there?</p>

<p>Rutgers Pharmacy is the best 6-yr pharmacy program in the east coast...so i heard....however,most ppl there have at least a 1400 SAT out of the 1600 scale.</p>

<p>Okay I was a Pharm major until I took an intership of death and ran away screaming but I should be able to help you out a bit here..</p>

<p>First the number 1 school for Pharm is University of California San Francisco, the only down side is that when you get your Pharm degree there and take the test it only qualifies you for California.. you can take the other test (which is actually easier.. but still another test to take)
the second best school is UT Austin..
You have a decent shot there.. you need to focus a little more on math and science .. you are a little to jocky preppy at least paper wise for Pharm school.. a lot of these kids (myself included) will have biotech internships and personal research under their belts and you haven't even taken AP Chem or AP Bio... not good. And your clubs are not science and math club which is bad for Pharm.
Still you have a shot at UT Austin..</p>

<p>Now my grandpa was a nuclear pharmacist (dean at 4 schools) (amazing guy) and so I toured a lot of pharm schools (meeting the dean's and such)
I really liked the University of Maryland, and their pharm program is pretty good. University of Washington is really pretty but their facilities are outdated and the dean seems more interested in personal research than student advancement(in my personal opinion)</p>

<p>It also depends a lot on the type of pharmacy.. if you are looking more retail most schools will be fine, but if you are wanting research you will have to be more careful in your selection.</p>

<p>Temple is an ok school and it is in Phili which is a fun town. Purdue also has a good program (most of these are nuclear pharm.. but regular pharm is good too)...
Im sure by now you know that pharm is 6 years two basic and 4 for your PharmD.. I would also really consider a PharmD/ PhD because that is almost giving you a PhD... usually they take 5 years and you can get it in 2 or 3.. that really you specialize and give you the edge...
I have just noticed that this post has become freakishly long so I will just say Best of luck.. and your stats for anything non science related are not that bad.. I think you need to focus a little more on what you are interested in...</p>

<p>One last thing.. here is a website for all the pharm schools in the world!!!
I don't know if it is super accurate but it is a good start...</p>

<p><a href="http://www.pharmacy.org/schools.html#US%5B/url%5D"&gt;http://www.pharmacy.org/schools.html#US&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p>

<p>Its a neat college that specializes in professional science and medical vocations outside of M.D. or D.O. But it is not cheap, but Ibelieve your chances of getting in is good. I also want a "college experience" since I'm only 17. It seems like it is only a small school 2600? and only 700 live on campus. I did like that they had a x-country team ( I run and they don't seem to be real competitive which is ok now just a stress buster) )and rec center. And I like you as much as I would like to think I,m headed in pharm direction and will get a seat if I don't go direct admit, can I transfer easilly to another major tthere.
I wanted to go 0-6 direct admit but $ is an issuue for me.<br>
By the way I live in UM area and I thought maybe like Ohio state they were going the 4 (BS)plus 4 route. My dad has a friend that went from buffalo to UM
pharmD. He now works for drug company research sc. He said it was good, tough and said like alot of top large universities, pharmd students sometimes take backseats to their research endeavors and told me if you want to be a retail pharm or even a hospital pharmd the shortage is so great that most pharmd programs will land you decent job offers. But if you want to go research and then phd pharmacology, etc. A UM type would be an advantage.
I personally don'tget the UM appeal, maybe I get sick of all the GO BLUE hoopla and arrogance. Maybe because i wouldn't get in the pharmD school, and wouldn't want to give them my 2years before they say no . And the campus is actually not that great. Some people like the fake grunge cafe barnes and noble meets starving artists mixed with the jocks that can do no wrong and the 100,000 blue and gold wannabees that don't go to U-M. But others love it. Its relatively easy to get into undergrad prepharm there ACT 27-30/ 3.6-3.8GPA but getting a seat in the pharmD program youre up against UM med students that got shot down .
I think my chances would be very slim. And You have to take chem classes taught by someone who may be helpful and you can understand there accent. I know someone who ended up with a D and retook
with another and got an A. But UM's Med Law Pharm and Bus Grad colleges etc. are some of the best. My cousin went there for undergrad. Loved AnnArbor and the Sports, but was a biology turned psychology major. Now in Boston took classes at Northeastern and said that she actually liked the better interaction and availabilty of proffs, but follows the Wolverines. I was also told the same holds true by someone who left Ohio State 4th year to cinncinati's pharmacy, better attention. Rutgers seems cool, what about Temple? Buffalo is supposed to be good but I think Dec1, cut-off for direct admit. Me I'm probably going to end up doing prepharm at the cheapest place I can even if they don't have a college of pharmacyand roll the dice.
Ive been accepted at Butler, Purdue pre-pharm, Drake, Toledo, but all out of state can't afford any of them, waiting for aid packages but I know none gave me a good preestimate, mostly loans. i love their estimators that say the cost to you shows $0.00 what about the $18,000 plus in loans every year. Even car dealers don't say this car is $0.00 We're giving you a third party loan for $ 18,000.00.
We also have Wayne State U in the middle of Detroit and my parents wouldn't let me go down there, but it is near the detroit medical center, if I was a guy might consider it. Our Postmans son goes to Pharm3rd year he's a trained killing machine though going their cheap via the Marines. He's 25years old.180lb, i'm 17, 5.2 ,103 but I'm fast. About an hour away for me I could commute. After seeing Butler, Purdue it would be hard to go that route, even Toledo was nicer. U-M is not that cheap about 21,000 for instate including fees 35,000 for out state. Ferris State is in nowhere's land in Mich, 3hour drive can't commute. Its a 2 plus 4 program. Some say its not the best college that its a last chance suit case college, but the pharm and optometry
36 seats represent only a fraction of the 13,000 students the rest with a 2.3/19ACT admission standard with a high drop out rate almost 50%. Good hockey team though, play DIV1 U-M, BC,MSU,Minn. The pharm students are 3.6 plus students some have Masters some have Phds mix of 19-45 year olds
in the professional pharmD program, their facilities and labs weremnt impressive. Their profs that gave presentations to us were sleepers.
URIsland is only like 5-6K for instate near the beaches. I might try to go there later since I have relatives there. Nuff about me but i thight Id share a prepharm life with you misery loves company? Temple?, LECOM? St Johns,
I loved Butler the people were all friendly and the campus kind of small was really nice kind of like toledo old archectecture but part of indianapolis is thriving fun city and huge I never thought it was that big. Not cheap though.
Northeastern is nice but the Bouve Pharmacy college is expensive and doesn't have a better pass rate than URI. Purdue was good rated, not much more info than on their website, big campus, but no guarantee of seat. Why can't we be like my friends , I think I'm gong into advertising I'm applying to U-M and MSU, done. I'm going into engineering i'm applying to Lawrence Tech,U-M or Kettering U,Done. if I want co-op I go to Kettering ( old General motors Institute of technology) and make $15,000 a year while learning. I can't beleive with all the shortage that we would have more regular schools with a 0-6 program, for me it would be great if grand valley state, central michigan or michigan state had schools they all have 20-35000 students, why don't they have a pharmacy school?
Anyways good luck with your search.</p>

<p>I asked my Grandfather about URI pharm.. he said it was not as good of a program (at least 30 years ago) because they were having trouble allocating funds. He said if you are going to pay good money for Pharm school you want to go to a school that is worth the money.
I also forgot to mention Texas A&M, their pharm school is brand new, but since it is a research school their program is okay. BUT supposedly they are offering money for good students, plus their faclities are really close to the beach..
Another school my grandfather worked at is Georgia Tech, it is a nice school. Supposedly the aid is not amazing but the program is okay.
As far as a job after if you are wanting to work retail you have many options. I met a pharmacist who only worked as a temp, when other pharmacists were off, and he got paid like ridiculous amounts of money. Supposedly he worked half the time and made as much as a regular 9-5 pharmacist. Also texas has such a shortage I heard that they will fly you in for the week and then fly you back home on the weekend. And some places will pay for you travel.
But you have other oppurtunities too, another pharmacist I know works at one of the big drug companies and writes all the advertising stuff they have to say (may cause heart attack etc) and if you get a PharmD/JD you can work on patent law which could be fun.. Oh and try to get on in a school where you get to go somewhere fun for an internship. At the University of Illinois at Chicago they said one of the rotations you could go to an Indian reserve and help out. You can also do internships abroad, so although you might not be able to study abroad as much you can do internships abroad .. which can be fun.. and can be not so fun.
As another note, when you are doing research for a professor do well, of course, but be careful not to do too well. I have heard more than one story of people actually getting failed just so their professor can have them in the lab a few more years. Definately watch out for this.. it is basically slave labor.
Another track you can go is academia research.. bad idea at least from everyone I have ever spoken too. The professors make it sound all noble about how it is really for the research and not the money.. don't listen. My aunt said she had to spend 48 hours solid in a lab so she could take samples every four hours.. she was actually sleeping on lab tables.
If you want to do research go commericial. Your professors will think you are a sell out to money.. but at least you get paid. For professors you barely have enough to rub two pennies together. Plus those research jobs will help you pay off all those nice Pharm loans or PhD loans.
Another thing to consider if you are wanting to do research and you are thinking of just getting your degree in pharmacology that is fine.. a little short cut but you will not be able to test on humans without a PharmD.. so you will be hiring one to do it for you.. no fun.
The last thing I think you should know is as far as getting hired after, 1) it will definately happen 2) if you want a great job they look at the school to see your mental stamina. I was told if you go to a place like UT Austin anyone is going to hire you because if you can survive all that crap they put you through you can survive anything. So just keep that in mind! Best of luck!</p>
