Do most pharmacologists have a PharmD or a PhD in pharmacology? Is one degree preferred over another, and is it even possible to become a pharmacologist rather than a pharmacist with a Pharmd?

I can’t really answer these questions, but you could get more information from programs that offer these degrees. Admissions staff are very knowledgable and helpful.

Keep in mind that the pharmD is generally a practicing degree. If you are set on the R&D side of things, I’d go with the PhD. If you strictly want to do pharmacology, skip the pharmD and go with pharmacology. If you want to practice or do research that is more patient-centered, then you’d want to go for a pharmD. I know a few people that have done both, but haven’t seen much benefit from it… not to mention how much time that would take!
