My child is a senior in High School and wanting to pursue a PharmD. Some schools - you get in, two years preparation with Bachelors courses, and then four additional years to complete PharmD. My question - It appears that UMich students entering the PharmD program have needed to spend more than two years (four semesters) to fulfill the UMich PharmD requirements? Is there such a thing as a high school student starting at UMich as a freshmen and receiving a PharmD in six years? A response is much appreciated.
I’ve seen that the majority of students accepted into the U of Mich PharmD program come from outside the University. The sixth year is 3 semesters anyway. A student from Illinois May have required three years of courses prior. Maybe is does amount to around 16 semesters - something like Ohio State?
Although it is feasible, all the few Pharmacy students I know got their BS degree first. For the pre-req, you likely need more than 2 years unless you have a lot of AP credits.
I’m a current pre-pharm student and even if you come in with a lot of AP credit, I think it would be extremely difficult to complete all of the pre-req courses for UMich’s PharmD program within 2 years. I really haven’t heard of any students who have successfully completed all of their pre-reqs in 2 years, and also the PharmD admissions panel doesn’t really like students who apply after only completing one year of undergrad because they lack experience and maturity compared to the majority of other applicants who have their bachelors. Generally, most pre-pharm students here either (1) complete pre-reqs in 3 years then go to pharm school (2) complete bachelors in 4 years and go to pharm school or (3) graduate a year early and then go to pharm school. The College of Pharmacy is now offering a new B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences program that you can transfer to after your first or second year, which enables students to “fast-track” and get a B.S. and PharmD in 7 years.
