Hello guys, I have a quick question about registration for classes at Cal. I was unable to go to CalSO and I sent a message to the CalSO program a month ago to explain why I couldn't come. Till now, I am unable to register for any class. I called the registration office today, and they said I have to wait till phase 2 starts. Does this happen to any of you here? I'm afraid that at that time there will be less classes available for me to choose.

Yup, that's a risk that comes with not attending CalSo.

thanks for your response, CalRussian
This really sucks. Why don't they think of the people that are taking classes during summer and the schedule conflicts with the CalSO day? Darn it, I never want to miss any lecture, and that's why I decided not to go.

passionate: what is your major? Did you complete all your pre-reqs already?

I'm a math major. Yup I completed my pre-req in my first year of community college. I just want to have R1A and R1B requirement done before I transfer, so I take summer school. I also took the classes that I don't need like Asian History and Women History. I should have taken American History and Political Science at my community college to fulfill the American History and Government at Cal. I'm so stupid.

I'm not sure about that major & getting your upper division classes. I'm a Sociology major so the last pre-req was pretty much a garuantee spot for cllasses in phase I for us, but since you already have those, you don't have to worry. Allot of those classes in Phase I are only open to seniors anyway & then they pull off the waitlist in Phase II. One good thing is that in Phase II after the Seniors, we (transfer students) then have priority before everyone else so I'm sure you'll get some of your classes.
It cost me allot to go to CALSO, I had to take a day off from work, plus skip a class, but it was worth it. My friends who are applying for next year, I think I'll suggest them going. good luck on your classes, you'll be fine.

Passionate,

Don't panic, and please don't call yourself stupid. Those classes do fill up quickly, but you can always crash them in the worst case scenario. My CalSO counselors said that getting classes is not usually bad at all. I guess we're gonna have to see about that.
And hey, I think that taken American History and Government class will be so much more rewarding at Cal than a CC. Have fun with it.

I'm not going to lie to you, you should have just skipped class that day and went. I'm sure most of the kids went to CalSO just to register.

thanks all for the feedback. Today I am able to register for my classes, but two of the classes I registered are full and I'm on the waiting list. Does anyone know what the chance to get in the class if you're on the wait-list?

Actually I heard it was pretty good, depending on how far down on the waitlist you are. Plus some people do not show up for the first class & dropped. Also we haven't finished Phase II yet, so I'm sure people will adjust, I know I have several times in the last few days.

thanks a lot luvtoolearn. You're always encouraging.
I'm kinda in a difficult situation. I don't know if I should take 15units for this first semester. Many people advise me to take only 12-13 in my first semester, but if I drop a 4-unit class, I will only have 11 units which is not full-time. I will only receive a protion of the fin. aid. This really sucks.
15 units is a lot at Cal I think, and I don't think it's doable for a transfer like me.

Yeah I dont even know what a workload at a semester school is supposed to be! I have been going to a quarter system school taking at least 15 units a quarter, though for the last two I took 19 a piece. I am currently enrolled in 16 semester units at berkeley, I am not sure if that is a lot or a little...

The problem is, if I plan to graduate in two years, I have to maintain this workload throughout the next 4 semesters, so dropping 1 class will set me back. (I have factored in classes I need to take over the summer).

What do you guys from semester schools think? Too much?

13 is the minimum 15 is ideal & your right, if you happen to drop one & go below 13 units, it causes allot of problems..I suggest adding one or two decal classes, those are fun p/np classes & the list comes out in a few days. Here is a link to the list for last semester...some really fun classes...

When attending CalSO, I got the impression that this semester, everyone should be taking 13, but that next semester, we are expected to take 16-18 to graduate in two years. I think I'd rather load the units now, rather than next year, when I will most likely be busy applying to grad school. I say you attend all the classes you've signed up for, and before the drop deadlines, see whether you can handle the course work.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. We have about 11 days after class begins to drop classes without it being noted on the transcript. It is kind of weird because if 13 is the minimum, taking 14-17 is like taking 1 more class than the minimum which doesn't sound that bad.

I'll probably see how 5 classes feel, and then make a decision before the drop date. Thanks for the input.
