Phase 1 Waitlist?

The class schedule says that I can't sign up for College Writing R1A because I need a CEC. Thus, I will put myself on the waitlist for now.

If I add myself to the waitlist for College Writing R1A, would it count as part of the 10.5 units?

Should I just sign up for the 2 other classes I am considering to sign up for during CalSo?

Waitlisted courses do count towards the unit total - to 10.5 for phase I and to the unit maximum for a semester for your college.

Would I be able to fulfill a breath and college requirement with 1 class?

Yes, some classes will serve more than one purpose. This discussion assumes you are in L&S, although similar logic operates for the other colleges.

A given class can’t be counted for more than one of the breadth requirements, but it can also cover the American Cultures, or it serve as a pre-req or a pre-med or some other purpose but in addition checks off one of the seven breadth categories.

For example, premed classes will satisfy the physical sciences breadth and the biological sciences breadth requirements, first hit with Chem 1a and the second from Bio 1a. If you don’t have the american institutions requirement yet, then a course to satisfy that could also meet the history breadth objective.

If you take say an AC course, it can fulfill a breadth as well.

I believe LS R44 or something (western civ) counts for one R&C as well as historical studies. History 7A/7B count as american history & institutions req as well as historical studies.

You just have to look it up online. ls-advise.berkeley.edu usually gives info on which classes can fulfill more than one req.

I wouldn’t recommend you to sign up for the waitlist of a tiny class. Chances are that seniors on the waitlist will make it into the class and you won’t. You have a long time at Berkeley and the R series classes can wait one semester. I tried being waitlisted for an R series class last semester for phase 1. I didn’t make it in and wasted my time showing up at a class I couldn’t even get. Also few people drop this kind of class since it is very important.

Is Western Civilization (L&S R44) really hard?
