I have got admission for my PhD in Chemistry at Dartmouth and Carnegie Mellon. Would the perception of Dartmouth as an

excellent undergrad college in any way undermine my PhD degree there?

Were I to go abroad after appropriate training, would I be in any

better position looking for an academic job being from one institution

as opposed to the other? How would the case be different were I to

continue in the States? What about an industrial job?

Are you crazy? CARNEGIE MELLON.

I don’t think any of us on here are equipped to answer questions about grad school. I think you should contact someone you know who has a PHD in chemistry.

I’m equipped to tell you that in 1993 Dartmouth’s chemistry program was ranked 63 (first time it broke the top 100 in a decade or so) and Carnegie Mellon’s was top 15. 1993 was the last time graduate school programs in chemistry were ranked formally. It would normally matter what type of chem you’re interested (orgo, inorgo, biochem) but here CMU is much stronger on every front. I think it would be foolish to choose Dartmouth.
