I've been searching and am really disappointed that while looking for PhD programs in African American Studies I can hardly find anything.
Does anyone know of PhD programs in African American Studies?

Penny, check out my website:

http://www.bhmaa.com/home/gradstudy.html

I have listed all the colleges and universities that offer graduate study in African American Studies.

Also, what are your research interests?

My interests lie in African American Identity Development...My background is psychology so although I have not seen much research on it I am interested in the psychological remnants of slavery that exist today.

Penny, I would browse those schools. I don't know many African American programs that have psychology departments. I know the history, sociology, political science, and literature areas. You may want to look into Psycholgoy PhD programs.

Great Site! You put it together yourself? Kudos!

I am truly surprised at the limited number of PhD's offered in African American Studies...I think that African American studies PhD's are by far the smallest area of any ethnic studies offered, this is sad.

Also I have looked into Personal/Social Development programs, the best match I've found thus far is University of Michigan. However at most other schools there are only 1 person who I would consider working with and Michigan has a plethora of people and very broad research interests.

I'm really hoping to find more than just Michigan available to me.

I also think it's odd that not too many of the African American Studies programs have psychology departments. I might quite possibly be biased but I think this is an important and overlooked part of African American Studies.

Penny, a lot of African American Studies departments don't have psychology departments because most scholars who specialize in psychology are in Education, Social Work and your typical Psychology departments. Psychology is a science (believe it or not) that requires labs and data. You want everything to be within Psychology (or Education and Social Work) setting. Same thing with Educational Psychology or Social Psychology.
