PhD in applied linguistics

hie. I am an Indian student majoring in Linguistics. i want to pursue my PhD in Applied Linguistics (Educational linguistics, precisely) from one of the Universities in US. However I have not been able to decide which universities to apply to. Linguistics is not a very popular field, so there is an absence of college rankings. And therefore I have not been able to make up my mind.
Pleeeeasee helpp!! :(

Thank you :)

Educational Linguistics does not seem to be a disciplinary field of study. What you mean, perhaps, is learning about linguistics as it pertains to education, and specifically language teaching. In this sense, Applied Linguistics would be the general field of study.

You’re right in saying that a ranking in Applied Linguistics is currently absent from most ranking exercise. This is also partly due to the lack of a Applied Linguistics department in most universities. The teaching of Linguistics for specific purposes such as education and language teaching is usually housed under the Linguistics department, Education department or English department in most universities.

My suggestion would be to look specifically at the departmental websites of various universities, as well as the faculties involved. What you want to know is if there are teaching faculties that do research in the areas you’re interested in. Perhaps TESOL, language assessment, language acquisition etc.

A few colleges to start you off with are:

Carnegie Mellon (Modern Languages)
UCLA (Applied Linguistics)
Georgetown (Linguistics)
Ohio State University (Linguistics)

Penn Graduate School of Education has an Educational Linguistics program you may want to have a look at.

Arizona State University also has an Applied Linguistics program. You should first think about which area in language education you want to focus on for your research and then choose a school depending on whether or not that school has professors with the same interests as you.

Thank you so much all of you for your replies. I did look at all the suggested colleges (and more!!). And I am neck-deep in the application process right now (and not liking it!! it is super-stressful!!)

Thank you once again. :)
