PHD in applied mathematics

Hey all,

I am a math math major at UCI, and I am strongly considering chasing after a degree in applied mathematics. I was wondering what the my fellow CC's thought of these schools:

UC Davis, UC Merced, University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Rice.

The problem for me is that there is not much of very large range of schools that specifically a PHD in Applied Math. If you guys know any other schools for a student with a 3.7 upper division gpa, and 3.6 overall please list them, I would highly appreciate it.

Oh and i have not yet taken the GRE’s

I attend Rice and I can tell you that the applied math department there is wonderful. I am not an applied math major, but, as a EE major with a minor in Applied Math, I have a good deal of experience with the two departments. Not only are the professors well respected, but they are exceptionally personable, and, since it is a small school, the attention is unsurpassed. Three of the exceptional professors that I’ve had are Richard Tapia, Mark Embree and Steve Cox. Look them up if you want to get a better feel for the program.

Brown has a top reputation in applied math.

I don’t think it is just about the gpa, so you can’t rule anything in or out. The research you’ve done is very important and there are quite many other components to your application, as well as finding a good match and people who want to work with you.

oh also i shall be doing some research in mathematical biology starting this summer… how much will that help. And yes brown looks good.
