Hey guys!!

Nice to know Indians have their own forum, but my question is pretty general!I've just joined the forum to get more dope on my situation!

I am a EEE graduate from Osmania Uni Hyderabad with 73.4%
I am currently in Glasgow in Scotland about to finish my Master's in EEE and Management in University of Glasgow. I haven't yet got my thesis results but my GPA for written exams (120) stands at 3.66/4. IELTS 8/9 and GRE score 1270 (530-v, 740-q).

As far as recommendations go, I have two very strong ones already, thanks to my thesis preparation.

I want to pursue PhD in Material science and obvious choice was one of these
Materials - Project - Graduate Schools - Education - US News

Although I have been advised to go for the lower ones (strongly advised)
I'd like to know your opinion with regards to my chances. I do have ample extra curricular activities and an employment history as well.

Thanks for the help I hope I'll get from here!!!

Cheers!!

Thing is, CC is mostly an undergrad forum. Some people have an inkling about grad school admissions, but PhDs are way out of most people’s area of expertise / etc. I’d ask you to post in the grad school forum, but you’ve already done that.

alimpossible, do you need financial aid?

My feeling is that it might be easier to get into MS and then continue on for PhD than entering PhD program directly. I don’t know the strength of your master’s program but I don’t know if your coursework in management is going to count towards advanced study in materials.

Given your stats, I have doubts about your chances getting into MIT or Stanford.

Thanks for your replies guys!!

blue_box,

yes, I realize that! But the thing is, this is the first time I am going to apply to any American university.Any experience comes in handy!

TippuSultan:

I checked with the school weppages and MS or not, I need to undertake those few graduate credit courses towards the PhD compulsorily.

I do understand that I don’t stand a chance with top schools like MIT or Standford and I wouldn’t be even giving them a try with these scores. But my question is what are the schools that I should be considering.

I trust my referees to provide me with good recommendations. How much will that affect the admissions committee and does teaching experience matter as I am applying for PhD, TA or RA will have to be mandatory(i guess)

Thanks for your replies again guys…!

Cheers!

and yea…

My current university ranks 17 amongst the universities in UK with my EEE department ranking 1st.

I think its the student that ultimately is judged and not where he/she comes from, but still, just to get an idea…how much does the previous school ranks matter to Ad com??
