hello,

Has anyone had any experiences transfering from a phd biomedical program to a md/phd program at the same institution or a different one?
i want a md/phd. SHould i attempt to transfer/apply to a md/phd program now or wait til i get my phD and then apply to md?

thanks!

I’d talk with the head of your school’s MD/PhD program. If you finish PhD and then apply to MD, you’ll have to pay for it. If you can transfer, you may not.

When I flirted with the idea of MD/PhD programs, I remember seeing most places indicate you can only go from MD to MD/PhD because the first two years of the dual degree program is medical school coursework. Also, I don’t foresee any way of changing institutions without losing your existing PhD work. That said, yes, talk to the administrative folks… it can’t hurt.

One of my profs told me that I could get my PhD and then go to med school and that if you do it right/plan it out, you can have some your PhD program classes count for some of the 2 yrs of med school course work (overlap the two)… I would ask the administration about requirements to see if you could do this.
