Phelps' Diet

I’ll be happy if I can eat half as much and not gain weight.

That’s unbelievable. If I tried to eat that much I would be sooo sick. But..imagine how much he exercises, to burn that all off? Wow. I think I eat around…1500-2000 calories a day. That’s normal, I think. 2000-2500 is kind of a lot for a girl but seems right for a guy, I don’t know which Invoyable is ^.^

In the end it doesn’t matter if he doesn’t eat enough “healthy” fruits and vegetables. Exercise is more important than diet anyway, and I bet in all measures of healthiness (cholesterol, percentage fat, etc) he’s healthier than all us anyway, even the ones who eat lots of vegetables =)

I’m related to pokemon.

And I agree with the vegetables, it’s a typical diet and I’m sure he eats some vegetables/fruits along the way occasionally.

As for this:

[on average] 5000 calories a day…LOL

He swims for 5+ hours a day AND weight trains for who knows how long AND he’s a 23-year-old male athlete.

Seems like he’s right on target…

Obviously I don’t eat this much food, but I’m blessed with my gangly father’s metabolism and eat a boatload of food every day. So I’m excited to see Phelps join my ranks haha.

Yea it’s great being the skinny kid and eating twice as much as the fat kid can.

It must suck to be the fat kid tho.

Great athlete. I have a couple friends who are bodybuilders and powerlifters (amateur), and one bb who should have gotten his pro card. Their diets maxed out at around 6000-6500. I can’t even imagine how much work Phelps has to do to need 12000. Total dedication to his sport, thats the cost of success in anything.

Yeah it must suck being super fat and eating all the time.

For the record, this is his diet during the Olympics only. Because he is swimming so many events he has to eat even more than he usually would.

To be honest I can’t believe you guys can only eat 900-1500 calories a day. I eat about 3000-3500 a day. I find it likely that you don’t all realize how many calories most food has. If I go out to eat at Mcdonalds one meal there for me is about 1500-2000 calories. When I eat spaghetti for dinner I eat around 1000 calories worth. For the record I am a 134 pound, 17 year old male. Hopefully though my body is preparing for a growth spurt since I’m only 5’5.5’'.

Keep in mind that, while most swimmers don’t come close to 12000 calories, seriously competitive swimmers need to eat a lot more than the average person. Any serious athlete does, and swimming in particular burns an insane amount of calories.

I may have to look into becoming a swimmer. I’m really not that good at it…but damn, I’d kill to eat all that and look like Phelps. =P

How long have you been eating ‘3000-3500’ calories a day? At a 134 lbs there is no way you can be eating that for more than a week or two before gaining weight. For reference, I am a little over 190 and can maintain my bw easily at 3500.

I have been eating this much for years.

Maybe I have a tapeworm.

But yeah, I decided to do some calculations after seeing your post. At the Mcdonalds website it says a double cheeseburger is 440 calories. When I go there for lunch or dinner I usually get 4 of them. That’s 1760 calories. Let’s look at what I just finished eating for dinner about 10 minutes ago. I had a box of kraft mac and cheese; upon inspection of the box, it appears that there are 3 servings in a box and 440 calories per serving. I had the whole box, as well as a cup of yogurt, carrots, and apple sauce. That would bring an average lunch + dinner to about 3008 calories. Now, to be fair, I didn’t eat McDonalds, or Chipotle, or any sort of high calorie food for lunch today because I was at school, but at school I had a large slice of pizza, fries, an apple, carrots, celery, and three cookies. So let’s assume for the sake of analysis that this lunch consisted of about 1000 calories, even though it is likely far higher. That would mean that lunch + dinner = about 1420 calories. Unfortunately this doesn’t take into account breakfast or drinks containing calories. My typical school day breakfast is something like waffles, cinnamon rolls (the Pillsburry tube type), cereal, or if I’m in a mad rush I just stuff 4 or 5 nutrigrain bars and a piece of fruit into my bag and head out the door.

Anyway you look at it though, if I miss out or eat very little for one meal I usually compensate in a later meal.

Now, this sort of diet analysis begs the question, what sort of exercise do I get?

Well, today I had tennis practice from 3:30 to 5:30. This includes about half of an hour of running/speed drills, and an hour to an hour + a half of traditional tennis drills including a court of regular rallying, a court with a rapid fire ball machine, two doubles courts, a court to hit against coach on, and a serving court. I’m usually worn out by the end of practice and can barely keep from falling over as I walk to my car on the other side of the building, but I wouldn’t say it is as intense as a workout I might receive lifting weights or swimming laps at the gym.

Now, I’m officially getting bored. Gonna go listen to some Radiohead.

But even if you eat 3000~3500 calories a day, if you exercise and burn a lot daily…

(I’m 2000~2500, as I have said before…I laugh at the 900 calories…)

Yes, it’s true. Lilygraces gets fewer calories than prisoners at the Flossenbürg concentration camp.

^Lol. I’m a tiny (in height) person and I don’t like a lot of food. I’m a ridiculously picky eater. Sometimes I eat more than 900, but an average day in the life of Lily, I eat around 900 give or take a bit.

Your diet is ridiculously unhealthy. Cinnamon rolls are the absolute worst. And MickyD’s??? gasp

But most of the fat in popcorn is unsaturated fat (unless it has butter in it), which is good for you. You don’t want to cut that out. Fat isn’t bad. Just don’t eat n excessive amount of it. lol

^And disgusting. My typical day (during the summer) is a bowl of honey nut cheerios mixes with raisin bran (half servings because it’s two) with chocolate soy milk, a tuna sandwich or sushi, a fiber bar with chocolate chips, and veggie stir fry or some sort of salmon/tuna. During the school year, I eat the fiber bar for breakfast during class, i eat a tuna sandwich or a lot of carrot and celery sticks and cheese and crackers, an apple and a cheese stick when I get home, and then the same dinner that I eat during the summer.

olol nice nutritious freaks!
