Hi chargers,
I took PHI101 last semester with Professor Hyde, and I can’t say if his format is similar to Carter’s. His class was in the format of – 50% of the grade was from midterm/final (questions were posted prior, but it was like 3 in each section and he’d pick 1 from each, pretty difficult … I was guided a lot and that helped me get a good grade!), with the other 50% being from quizzes almost every class + in-class sheets (basically to make sure you’re attending and paying attention.)

He’s pretty specific on what he was looking for in the quizzes/midterm/final, so that was what was hard. We spent the semester reading “Plato’s Republic”, (of which the book is an argument on why you’re ‘better off doing the right thing’ etc, google it) which in tandem with his lectures actually changed my opinion of philosophy from loathing to enjoying it. It’s one of Plato’s most famous pieces, so if you want to take 101 you can do either or with the professors.

I can’t say if I’d take another course with him (as I sat on a B- most of the semester while studying my butt off and trying to interpret everything), but honestly it depends on the format of the class for me. I know he teaches 108 as well, so I was contemplating it. He’s funny and extremely helpful if you ask him questions. I’d learn more in one class period than in a semester in some of my other classes.

In his defense, philosophy is obviously hard and it’s not his fault at all. I enjoyed Professor Hyde, and if the reviews are great for Carter I say go for it. I’m not sure if she’ll use the same book as Hyde.

Also, the class was at 8:20 in the morning. NOT primetime for absorbing topics that provoke thinking.

Good luck!
