Hi all,

I was wondering if people eligible for Phi Beta Kappa this year (4th years) had already been contacted. Didn't really know where else to ask. I've seen the other threads, but I am not sure if UVA is constant each year around the time they send out notifications.

Thanks!

I’m a 3rd year and I was contacted back in March.

OP, what is your GPA? 3.7-3.8 is typical for 4th years for the cut off.

3.85. But if someone else was contacted in March… damn. Probably didnt get it. :(

Remember that a high GPA is not the only eligibility requirement, you need to have taken 15 credits or more every semester AND have a schedule that is deemed rigorous and diverse that shows commitment to the liberal arts (Something which I thought I didn’t have because I only take high level math, stat and envi-sci classes. All my other subjects are either 1 or 2 thousand levels).

Just checked my e-mail, I was notified March 19th of my selection.

Congrats on your 3.85 btw. No easy feat at this school.

Thanks, 110percent haha. Yeah, I’m thinking that might be it. I’ve taken a few science/math-ish courses outside of my concentration (really only econ and accounting though, so not too sure how that counts), but I guess it didn’t show enough diversity. Thought it would be fine, considering I got Intermediate Honors…

Oh well. Would’ve been nice to have, but life goes on.

That’s crazy!!! I can’t believe you didn’t get it.

I took multiple semesters below 15 credits and still got PBK… It really depends.

After reading the post more carefully, I’m starting to think the OP might be in Comm school. OP, are you doing a comm school concentration in accounting? If that is the case that would explain why you did not get PBK. To get PBK the college has to be your primary school, aka ONLY school. If you are in Comm school you are only eligible for their honor society equivalent. Same thing happens in engineering. Engineers get Tau Beta Pi and not PBK.

@110percent, nah I’m not Comm school haha. And I actually really suck at accounting (which is probably why I’m not in the Comm school). I’m a foreign affairs major.

Actually, I figured I should update this thread – I was contacted by the UVA PBK chapter this morning, and my invitation was officially extended to me. Apparently they had sent me an earlier invitation but it got lost in the mail (I don’t see how; I thoroughly combed through my spam, trash, etc. and even went all the way back to March 19 to see if I’d missed anything). So it looks like things worked out after all. Psyched!

Thanks for all the help, guys. Much appreciated.

Glad it worked out for you!!!

Congrats wahoowa, see you at the induction =p

Is the requirement for 15 hours per semester really true for every semester? A family member has a perfect GPA after three years of a very rigorous set of classes, but dropped down below 15 hours one semester for health reasons. It doesn’t seem right not to be invited. Is the same rule of 15 every semester also true for fourth-years before graduation? What if you are in the College but the classes are mostly science, math, etc., and light on the humanities? Is that a negative?

I had multiple semesters below 15 credits. It just depends I guess. My schedule was math heavy.

Well, the PBK page does list a contact person (the President) if someone in the family decides to make an inquiry. It still seems odd that a rigorous 4.0 wouldn’t cut it. How many people have a 4.0 after three years? I suppose there is no information like that floating around anywhere.

I wish! Very very few. I knew a girl with a 3.97 who got PBK after her 3rd year, so if they exist, they are likely inducted then…
