Phi Beta Kappa people, did you get the key and do you ever wear it?

I agree with Calmom. My mother got me the key and I wore it the induction ceremony and to graduation. It has my college name and the chapter engraved on it. It is in my jewelry box now but I am happy that I have it. It was a special honor to be nominated into PBK and the key is a special memento. I think you should get it for her, even if she is not a jewelry person.

I never got a key nor attended the ceremony (not even sure they had one). If my parent (or anyone) gave me a key, I’d keep it but it’s more “stuff.” I doubt I’d ever wear it.

Both of my parents had keys. I saw them in the past, but I have no idea where they are now. One of my sisters may have them.

Husband has the gold key - it’s now in my drawer with single earrings, broken necklaces and other “junk gold” I’m considering selling!

@Massmomm Particularly given the adversity your D has overcome, I’d buy her an inexpensive (not solid gold) key. Nothing wrong with a mom giving a token gift to say “congratulations and well done.” Even if the key sits in a jewelry or memento box and brings her a smile and a boost of confidence once in a while I’d say it is worth getting it.

I bought one- I’ve never worn it but I like seeing it in my drawer

I never got one and I’d feel really weird about wearing it, but that’s just me. I remember there was a lot of weird stuff in the catalog… like a PBK rocking chair or something?

It’s a personal choice and it seems important to you, so why not? Cannot imagine wearing something like this unless you are the host of a chapter meeting or something, and even then sorta dweeby. Since anyone can buy one of these things online, it seems like a vacation souvenir trinket that will likely be in a drawer with those smashed pennies or broken chains - but sounds like some people still like having it, even in that case.

My parents got me the key. I’ve never worn it and had no idea people actually did.

Why on earth would anyone buy one of these online?

Yes @rebeccar, there was a ton of weird stuff in the catalog. There’s a definite “come join us” culty vibe, but it’s also one of the few legit honor societies.

My kids PBK is stuffed in a file. He couldn’t care less about it.

Yes, I got a key…and a plaque. (My dad bought the latter for me.) I have worn the key three times: when I was inducted, at the ceremony at which another “batch” of my classmates were inducted, and at the ceremony at which my kid was inducted. At that ceremony, there was a moment at which all parents of inductees who were themselves PBK were asked to stand and another during which parents elected to PBK at the same school were asked to stand.(I went to a different college.) I wasn’t the only parent wearing my key. It was interesting–to me at least–to see how many inductees had parents who were also elected. I thought it was okay to wear a PBK key at a PBK initiation.
