<p>I have been contacted twice now about qualifying and having the chance to join Phi Sigma Theta. However, upon limited research (namely, Google research) it seems to me that Phi Sigma Theta might not be worth the $50 one-time fee. It seems comparable to my high school's NHS chapter, meaning anyone with a reasonable gpa (3.0) can join. I'm guessing many of you guys got letters to join? Is it worth the $50 to join a lesser known honor society?</p>
<p>the only honor society i would join is phi beta kappa. its the most renowned honor society. the other honor societies, you can just mention on your resumes that you got invited to join.</p>

<p>Any honor society that’s not Phi Beta Kappa is basically a scam. No grad school is going to be impressed that you paid a $50 membership fee and got over a 3.0 GPA to join.</p>
<p>My husband was a member of Phi Sigma Theta back when he was in college, 30 years ago, and did not feel it was a scam.</p>
<p>As for those who think NHS in high school is not worthy of joining, there are many kids who would love to have that honor. At our high school, even having the required GPA does not guarantee you admission. You must have leadership, service, as well as academics. In fact, many minimum required GPA kids get in before even the valedictorians, especially the athletes. Some valedictorians get inducted right before graduation almost as an afterthought, as if the school would be embarrased to give highest academic honor to one who is not in the honor society.</p>
<p>As a freshman in college, I agree, one should be leery of joining organizations that require a fee, but how many kids join fraternities/sororities that charge outrageous amounts of money and are really no benefit once they graduate.</p>
<p>If the organization has a campus chapter, I would give it a little more credibility than one that is just an anonymous postcard where you send a fee and get a certificate in the mail.</p>
<p>An honors organization that actually has an induction ceremony on campus, a faculty moderator, similar to a high school honor society, would seem to be more credible than the scams that I’ve seen reported on news stories.</p>
