Students might want to think twice before joining PTK. The local chapters are good for making network connections, and for supportive attitudes, but over the past few years, the HQ has shifted after the President of 30 years was heralded out the door amidst accusations, which were never fully investigated. Under its new leadership, which has a new broom approach, long standing, loyal administrators in their Jackson HQ have been systematically culled. Worst of all, the goals and missions of PTK have been abandoned as the hierarchy focusses on a corporate policy approach, becoming a numbers game, where what PTK says is not what it does. Because of the now falling membership, scholarships are fewer, and many paid for by reducing staff compensation and benefits, or dispensing with them all together. Whereas in the past, staff were all PTK members, those with a PTK background have been the first in the firing line. So think twice if you consider PTK which is not so much focused on its mission statement now as it is on your membership fee…
I’ve heard it’s not useful to join unless you can get a leadership position. I was originally mad at myself for not joining, but after hearing your’s and other’s negative reviews about it I’m glad I saved the money and time
There is a strong stigma at my school for PTK that if you didn’t join its because you’re not smart enough or didn’t have the GPA for it. I personally, among a few of my friends, have 4.0’s but didn’t join because there is no tangible benefit to our life outside of the potential for a scholarship among a competitive applicant pool. In a current honors class I am enrolled in, all the PTK kids act like high schoolers in how they gossip about PTK drama - it’s pretty annoying. I have both the president and another officer in one of my classes. They are also two of the most arrogant and disrespectful people I have ever met. I am not saying this is PTK’s fault - but it seems like that is the crowd they tend to draw and I don’t want to be associated with it (another reason I didn’t join).
Agree with @ridiarte, I am a five star PTK member but I do not like to associate with that crowd at my school. In addition to PTK, I would say ASG are also full of people like ridiarte mentioned - the members from PTK and ASG overlap at my school.
Just my experience at my school tho
What is PTK?
@riceball123 it’s a honors society for community colleges
@choukevin oh I didn’t know that. I go to PCC and we have AGS - Alpha Gamma Sigma
@riceball123 lol i think it’s funny how they use the greek alphabet to name the honors societies - it makes it seem like i’m in a frat when in reality its nothing close to being a frat
Interesting first… and up to now, only, post.
@choukevin I know! when I wear the hoodie people ask me what sorority I’m in and I’m like “oh no it’s an honors society… not a sorority…” lol
@bjkmom I noticed that too - fishy. Still, I just wanted to share my experiences with PTK at my CCC
@riceball123 whattt you guys have hoodies? I need to look into those…
@choukevin yes we do! We were promised transcript notations too!
