Phi Theta Kappa?

Hello, I am a 2nd year student currently in a CC who did his first year at a four-year university with hopes to transfer back to a UC next year. It was join-a-club day so to speak and I was browsing around and came across the honor society PTK.

I have heard that they invite people usually but you can also join it/apply for it as long as you meet certain criteria (3.5+ GPA, certain number of transferable units, etc) but the one catch is the $85 membership fee. Is it worth joining? Especially considering that I am likely transferring out next year.

One reason I had of joining it was simply for including it on the transfer app (I have very little ECs, eh). I guess superficial reasons aside, they do boast a lot of scholarships for their members. But I read that being in PTK does not help much if you are transferring out anyway. Anyone care to share advice/experience? Thanks!

It doesn’t help very much, but put it on your application if you have few other ECs.

Heh, I can’t even remember if I listed it on my application or not last year.

Thanks for the response @Cayton! Side question, but is there any difference from Alpha Gamma Sigma? All I know of so far is that the requirements/criteria differ slightly. Is one better than the other? (thought I realize it wouldn’t make much difference on the app)

@Bearly

Not really. They seem to have the same GPA requirements. Neither is more prestigious than the other, although the representatives of those clubs will tell you differently.

Alright, I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again!
