Phi Theta Kappa

I was looking into doing some EC's to boost my app.

Does anyone know about this and how does it look on an app?

They say its a national honor society

you need a 3.5 gpa or above, and it looks good, if you plan on going to ucla you can get tap certified by taking 6 honor classes.

well.. PTK's main advantage is that you become eligible to apply for PTK scholarships. But it won't really boost your chance of admission by a lot.

Are you planning on taking a leadership position in PTK? If not, then it'll do you NO GOOD in the admission, and you'll have a very slim chance of actually winning a scholarship. But if you want a filler for the EC, go ahead and take it.

in the ptk informational meeting, they said that they have scholarships to mainly universities OUTSIDE CA, so if you're thinking about those, then you should look into those opportunities. also, its good for recommendation letters, but that's only if you participate. MANYMANY ppl, including me, only pay the $60 lifetime fee and you're a member forever, but never actually volunteer/participate/ go to meetings .. hahaa

PTK is more scholarship/bourgeois/pencil neck must make myself look smart group. I mean, if you dig going to an honors conference to present research on a pretty worthless topic to put on your resume, then by all means go right ahead. If you're looking to contribute to society, you won't be doing much besides a day every couple of months. I just think its a waste of time. People in these clubs often think of themselves as superior to others in every way possible; intellect, personality, and culture. As far as a transfer student, it really does not matter. I have gone to information sessions by some of the higher end transfer to schools in California and all of admissions counselors say that ecs don't matter if you work 20-30 hours per week because working is your ec(especially if the job correlates with intended career/major goals).

The choice is yours. Spend a worthless 3 hours a week chatting with a circle of people that don't open its doors to everyone or volunteer for a meaningful cause.

thanks for the input guys

Naw you just need a 3.5 GPA and a $75 (well that's how much it costs to join PTK at my school, but it may vary among schools).

But it does not really worth the money, IMO.

It depends on whether or not you're in California. As you can see, the people that posted are against it...because they don't want to take an active role in it. From what I understand, however, the transfer scholarships to UC schools are very limited in regards to PTK members, which therefore implies you'd have to burst your tail.

It's up to you...if you're wanting to get into a semi-decent school from a CC, you're going to burst your ass and more. PTK, in my opinion, provides an avenue that will put you along the right path...and the 75 dollars these people complain about will be met ten-fold. Certainly has made a difference for me.

for TAP certification, you have to do a certain number of honors classes in a TAP certified school. just to clarify that for you sauronvoldemort.

dhl3 thought you were talking about PTK, because he described what was requirement for PTK not TAP (ucla transfer agreement) . just to clarify this and not confuse anyone..

PTK International Convention in Nashville next semester. w00t lol

Hey Laguna, I'm running for International Officer. Watch out for Deeneaus Polk, but most importantly VOTE FOR ME!!!

Wow , I am actually hoping people will continue to think this is a scam. That way there will be less competition for the scholarships!!! Since Joining my school has payed for me to attend the conference in Seattle, I have received 2 scholarships totaling $2500 and the school is paying for a week at Boston University for the honor institute . I also plan to run for an International office next spring. I don’t consider that a bad return on a $80 investment.

Looks good on a transcript. I didn’t join, but if I stay in community college (i.e., transfer is unsuccessful) then I will next year.

It doesn’t make a difference if you are a ptk member or not. People say that it increases your chandelier to get into ucla or berkeley but that is not true

I agree with the comments that say PTK is useless unless you’re willing participate as an officer. At my CC, the PTK executive board members win the top scholarships/awards available (i.e. New Century Scholar, All-USA, Jack Kent Cooke, Coca-Cola, etc.). My school’s chapter has been a 5-star chapter for nearly 20 consecutive years and we also win the majority of the annual regional awards; this year we won a distinctive international award.

If you are nominated for these awards (without winning) you can still add the nomination to your resume. There are many top schools/programs who heavily recruit CC students. For example, I receive information packets in the mail and through email from colleges all around the nation because I’m a PTK member; many give PTK scholarships upon transfer. Admissions officers have explicitly told me that I was contacted b/c my PTK membership. In my case, I am certain that my PTK officer involvement + major scholarship nomination gained me admission to an Ivy for Fall 2011.

Hmm the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at my school is one of the top 25 in the world. We have some very bright students and do a lot of community service work. I just recently joined but I am a member of the school’s honors college and we have done a lot of projects this year.

Just by paying the $100 and busting my butt to have the 3.7 gpa (it’s higher at my cc) I automatically got a scholarship to SMCM for $4000 a year. St. Mary’s tuition is only around 13,000 a year.

I was a member and received $11,000 a year for three years just for transferring from my Community College after one year with a 4.0, which isn’t that hard to do at a Community College, so I think it was well worth the fee and volunteer work. I never used it as an EC so I don’t know how well respected it is. But it was worth the $33k reduction in debt that I am glad I don’t have to payback now.

GW gave me a scholarship because I’m a PTK member:
