Philadelphia Named Best City for New Graduates

Philadelphia named best city for new grads - U.S. business - MSNBC.com

Well that’s a pleasant surprise.

The relatively low cost of living in Philadelphia, combined with its abundance of [Stuff White People Like](http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/) and proximity to NYC and DC (and of course the fact that it has Penn) make it a good city to launch yourself.

It’s also very walkable and therefore “green” which is oh so hot right now. The post-industrial services economy is healthy, too.

uh, too bad no one wants to stay there after graduating

Uh, lots of them want to stay, and do–that’s one of the reasons the Center City housing market continues to boom. The problem is that there aren’t enough jobs to keep more of them in Philly.

rofl freetense, a ton of people stay after graduating

yeah but they don’t want to. and they probably are in the college so they have no choice but to work for the first person that offers them a minimum wage job.

^ I think that’s supposed to be funny.

I myself am actually making BELOW minimum wage…but I’m doing it in India ;)

I was walking around Philadelphia with friends after going to a BYO. Perhaps it was the wine talking, but we all thought it would be a nice place to live for a bit.

That’s better than getting shot at

Maybe I’m weird but I really don’t want to work in places like New York for too long, for example. Not that I’d want to spend eons working in Philly, either. But I’ve worked in NY before and it wasn’t my cup of tea after a few months or so. Working in Philly after graduating is by no means a permanent thing, and there are still ample opportunities to gain experience and later work somewhere more preferable if you wish.

While I’m not sure what I’ll be doing after graduating, this summer I am working in Philly at a small but successful trading firm. I’ve also got free housing for the summer as a perk from another summer job (on campus), so all in all, it’s really a pretty good deal.
