Philadelphia Schools

Compare Temple, Drexel, Villanova, LaSalle, and St. Joe's. What are each known for and how respected are each of them. Anyone who is an alumni or has personal information on any of the schools that would be great.

Anyone please?

Villanova is the most academically prestigious in your list with Saint Joe's as a close second.
Here are some stand out academic programs and commentary:

VU: business, nursing, engineering. a solid B+ academic school. kids can be a little stuck up. very privilege bubble-y, see gucci and prada in class. decent sports but students are not given tix
StJ: business programs. jesuit run and further into the city. most liberal of the catholic schools you mentioned. fantastic merit money and because of it the school is a vehicle for social mobility in philadelphia
Temple: health sciences and communications and the arts. a solid urban public, not in a great area but markedly improving. a great bang for your buck
LaSalle: if you can't get into Villanova or St. Joes this is a good bet
Drexel: Has a great co-op program, however I am unsure if it is worth the price. the facilities and neighborhood aren't great and it is expensive.

Thanks. So Temple's Communications is the best in Philly. Does anyone know about their journalism and career placement in the communications school?

So Temple's Communications is the best in Philly

If you don't include Penn's Annenberg School.

as to prestige the schools go as follows:

Villanova>>>Drexel/Temple>>St. Josephs>La Salle

St. Josephs is really not worth the money, imo, for the quality of eductation u will get.

I would place the prestige as:

Villanova
St. Joes
Temple
Drexel
LaSalle

I grew up in Philadelphia and am basing htis on local perception

GoCanes, prestige and quality of education are entirely different measures to judge a school.

I spent my summer at Penn last summer and had a chance to see these schools, and since I didn't really look at them academically, all I can tell you is about the appearances of them:
Drexel - RIGHT by UPenn...but in a more outskirty area. There isn't much of a designated campus really, so if that's important to you, it may not be the BEST choice.
Tempe - worst campus imaginable. I would not want to go there even if it had the best academics/activities in the WORLD. Be prepared to carry a gun at all times if you decide to go here...or atleast, that's what I felt like when I walked around a little bit

On the other hand, Villanova had a nice area, albeit a little desolate looking in SOME places, the actual town its in and everything is really cute.

(note how I am helping you oh-so-much by giving you the answers to questions you didn't really ask, hahah. sorry...;))

Thank you for all the replies. I want to be a sports writer, so of all the Philly schools which would provide the best opportunities and education for me?

I live in Philadelphia and I know people at all these schools except LaSalle. Temple's surrounding area is not good (that might be an understatement), but the campus is relatively safe. Just make sure you don't leave it alone at night. And I know a ton of people that go to Temple, and they all love it. There's never a dull moment on campus. Drexel, on the other hand... I know a lot of people there too, but I know very few that like it. Many of the people I know at Drexel already did or are trying to transfer out. Villanova has a nice campus, although I hear it gets sort of boring (it's not in the city). It's probably the most prestigious on your list, though. And I don't know enough about the other two to give my opinion on them.

My sister and nephew recently toured all these schools (a year ago) and were very impressed with the Temple campus and facilities. They thought Villanova and St. Joe's were both too expensive. They are from the suburbs, so know a lot about the schools already. Drexel is awful- the strength is the coop program.

Yeah I went down to Temple's campus earlier this year (I had never actually been on campus but I had heard bad things) and I was really impressed. Don't rule Temple out because of its location and campus.

Why do your friends love Temple? What makes it impressive? I'm mainly interested in Temple, it's one of my main choices right now. Any specific info on the journalism and newspaper.

They love it because it's a vibrant campus, and there's always something to do. If you like to party, Temple's for you. If you don't like to, Temple can just as easily be for you. There are so many people with so many interests that you can't go wrong with Temple (well you can only go wrong if you don't like cities). And that's another thing: Philly is so accessible and there are so many opportunities in the city if you go to Temple. Also, it's impressive because the school has done so much in recent years to upgrade the campus and make it a safer place. And I don't know much about journalism or the newspaper, sorry.

Temple has an incredibly strong network and reputation in Philadelphia. If you plan to stay in Philadelphia, Temple is a great choice. I also don't know much about the journalism program.

Anyone else?

Nova has a beautiful campus away from the hustle and bustle of Philly yet the school provides easy transportation to Philly right from campus...many students use it all the time and its not that expensive from what I recall. When I toured, they emphasized how well respected Nova is in the PA area and beyond and how employers come to them looking for interns and such. I feel that Nova would be a good fit for you b/c of its prestige compared to the other schools on your list and the opportunites of Philly while not having to worry as much about safety or city distractions. The campus life is very vibrant w/ lots of parties, Greek events, special olympics, etc. Check out Villanova for sure. I am a prospective journalism/english student and am also considering applying to VU. It's got solid academics all around.

Where else are you considering? What draws you to Nova's journalism program, and what specific opportunities does it provide? Thanks!
