Philadelphia theater

We want to get our girl tix to see Newsies in Philly as a grad present. The show is on stage end of Oct/beginning of Nov. I cannot purchase tix thru the Kimmel Center until sept or oct. There are 2 online sellers that I could use-Philadelphia Theater or Vivid Seats & buy tix now. I'm not sure if that is a good (safe?) idea & if I would be paying more thru them?

Any Philly residents that can give me some advice?
Thanks so much!
Tami

Tami, I think it would be fine to wait until Kimmel Center goes on sale. I hope I’m not giving you bad advice but if you mark on your calendar to buy it the first day it’s available, you should be fine. (I personally wouldn’t purchase it outside of Kimmel.) Kimmel doesn’t sell out like B"way, at least as far as I know. But others should pipe in-- I myself don’t see tours, since I go to B’way for these shows; NYC is only 1.5 hours away. I’m betting she’s a Newsies fan–would you consider her seeing it in NYC? Buses are very inexpensive from here to NYC; my kids were doing this in high school. Another thing to think of and I hope you don’t mind — Philly has tons of theatre going on! TThere are many excellent regional theatres here that will put on an excellent show.

I don’t have the exact answer either but if it were me, I would not get the tix through a ticket broker online, particularly at this juncture. I would wait until the official tix go on sale through Kimmel. I would inquire as to which date the tix go on sale and then mark that date on my calendar and call or get tix online that morning when the tix go on sale. You should be able to procure a ticket that way.

Re-reading my post now–I think that came across as snobby, and I’m sorry if it did. I was only putting it out there that you can also consider Philly regional theatre, or else go up to B’way to see Newsies. But glad Soozie agrees with me–I too think waiting to order it from Kimmel is fine.

Thx ladies! I appreciate the advice, we will plan on getting them from the Kimmel Center, I think I can sign up for emails thru them & be sure to be kept up to date that way.
connections, you did not seem snobby at all, I understood what you were saying! We are looking forward to getting to know theatre in Philly over the next 4 years!
Thx again!

Tickets are available now online from the Academy of Music’s webpage. Act now or the good seats will be gone!

I agree with Michael. If you want good seats, I’d order now. If you’re not as interested in the best seats, it’s probably okay to wait, but you may not have the best selection. One other comment, I’m guessing your D will be starting school in Philly in September? If so, I’d be hesitant to purchase tickets in advance for her. Without knowing her schedule or what her commitments might be, it’s possible that you may choose a date that will not work for her. Just something to think about.

Yes, they are so, so, so busy once they get to school. Are you going with her or just sending tickets? You could probably send her a gift certificate if the latter, so she could pick a date that works for her. (It’s a very sweet gesture, either way. Your daughter is a lucky girl.) She will also have access to all kinds of cheap tickets as a theater student. The first text I got from my S after I dropped him off last year said that he had gotten a $20 ticket to Book of Mormon.

MichaelNKat-But that appears to be a reseller for the academy of music so is that a good idea?

I think this is an awesome and generous idea, but I agree with others that you don’t know what her schedule is yet so it might not be a good idea to purchase tickets so far in advance. I’ve never done a tour at the Kimmel, but I did go to the ticket link to Academy right now and the tickets seem awfully expensive to me, more than B’way. I wonder if they will go down if you buy direct from Kimmel? Or if she can get student rush at the Kimmel for this show. This way she can do it based on her daily schedule. Although I totally understand your desire to hand her the tickets! I wish I could help you more. I’m sure she’ll enjoy the regional theatres here once she gets settled in! --they all have day-of student rush. Walnut Street Theatre, for instance, has student tickets for $25 day of. They do fabulous shows. The Arden, too, as, well, many theatres. I think your D will love the theatre scene here!

Yeah, you are right, I didn’t catch that it was a reseller. The actual Academy of Music site doesn’t have the tickets up yet. Resellers do charge a premium. I would watch the actual Academy site daily. Once the tickets go up, the good seats will be grabbed. Also, the Kimmel pushes subscriptions to the Broadway series so you never know what seats will be available.

I, too, would wait to order from the theatre. You can do what my best friend’s mom did for me. She put the Newsies logo inside a ticket outline and printed it off with the accompanying message: “Newsies: Coming to Chicago this December. We’ll get you there with a real ticket in your hand.” Trust me. If she’s anything like me, the placeholder ticket will still cause her to scream and cry.
