Phillips Academy Andover: ask a student.

Hey guys, I'm Alison and I currently attend Phillips Academy Andover. Congratulations to all the people who got accepted!
Leave me questions regarding Andover and I'll try my best to answer them all!

How many people usually get off of the waitlsit???

Well, it all depends on each year. I heard that this year had the most competitive applicants in the school’s history. Many years, Andover don’t accept people from the waiting list because many accepted students tend to choose Andover. The most people Andover accepted from the wait list were 3-- in 2008.

I have two…
Why did you choose Andover over other schools?
What’s a typical day like?

Thanks:)

Ok… I have heard from some people that boarding students have a better chance of getting in, and from others that day students have a better chance… which is true? Also, would it help my position on the waitlist if I called and told them that I wouldn’t mind being a day or a boarder???

1) I chose Andover because ever since I visited Andover for my interview, I fell in love with the community and the school. Since then, it was at the top of my list.
But, I’m not saying Andover is the “best” school. I was accepted at many other schools. At the end, I was deciding between Exeter and Andover. I don’t ever regret choosing Andover. It’s an amazing school.

2) Very, very busy. After attending all your classes, you have to spend all night studying. That’s the only way you can get straight As in Andover.
A typical day for me is : attending classes -> meeting with the teachers(for extra help/questions) -> clubs/sports -> hw/studying -> call family -> sleep.
If you can’t manage your time wisely, Andover is not a good choice.

Reply to EternalTime:
Neither of them are easier. Both have the exact same chances of getting in.

ok, thanks =)

Have you felt Andover too large for people to fall through the cracks? Is it’s reputation as a sink or swim school well-earned?

What do students think of Headmaster Ms. Chase retiring? Do they think it is a major loss? Is she popular with students? Any internal candidates likely to fill her position?

Thanks.

1) It depends on each person. For me, Andover was fine and I didn’t “fall through the cracks”. Although there were stressful times, but I don’t regret choosing Andover.
Andover’s reputation is not a “sink”. Although it may be stressful at times, the teachers still go help the students or email their parents if they are having trouble or falling down.

2) Headmaster Ms. Chase retiring is a sort-of-a-major loss for Andover. Most of the students really liked her, including me. She was a very kind and warm headmaster to everyone and she made sure that all students were feeling at home in Andover.
I’m not sure who will fill her position yet.

What are the things that you would change at Andover?

Ummm, not much. I guess if I had to pick one, the amount of work we get. But that actually prepares you well for college…. I’ll think about this for a second :)

Which year is the best year to begin Andover?

Is there a way to connect on Facebook with other Andover students so my daughter meets a few (online) before she arrives?

Which classes are the most popular?

Does anyone check to see if your room is clean?

What kind of campus jobs exist?

Do you ever eat “family” style with upper and lower classmen and teachers?

What was your transition to Andover like? Was it very difficult to get good grades? My greatest fear is that I will struggle and do poorly if I attend Andover next year.

Bsalum, that’s a great question about how students could connect with other incoming students!

I’ll start a thread for incoming andover students…maybe everyone will start to chat here or perhaps someone will begin a FB page…

ok, forget it- sounds silly and feeling ridiculous, but I don’t see how to start a new thread. Does someone else want to do it, or explain it to me?

bsalum- on the home page for prep school admissions, on top of page 1 of topics and under the “hot topics”, there should be a button that says new thread.

hey Alison!
You might not know me well, but my brother(Brain) is attending Andover with you. I also got a glimpse at you while I was having my tour.
Expect to see me next year as a freshman at Andover! :D

Q:Which year is the best year to begin Andover?
A: As a freshman.

Q:Is there a way to connect on Facebook with other Andover students so my daughter meets a few (online) before she arrives?
A: There isn’t a way that I know of, but you shouldn’t worry because Andover is a loving place and all the students are very open towards each other. It’s really easy to make friends.

Which classes are the most popular?
History, Science and Art tend to be the most popular.

Does anyone check to see if your room is clean?
No.

Do you ever eat “family” style with upper and lower classmen and teachers?
We do somtimes, but that doesn’t happen very often.

What was your transition to Andover like? Was it very difficult to get good grades? My greatest fear is that I will struggle and do poorly if I attend Andover next year.
The first few weeks were the most challenging to me. Getting to know everybody, handling all the work…etc, it was very difficult and time consuming. Yes, it IS difficult to get good grades, but if you try really hard, you will be able to get all As-- like me. If you are good with handling much work at a time, you should be able to handle okay at Andover. However, if you are someone who easily gets distracted, or is not organized, your years at andover will be very difficult. If Andover is your first choice, I suggest GO FOR IT! Andover is an amazing school. :]

hey alice, Brian has talked a lot about you!

–Notice: I won’t be able to respond back for a couple of days because I will be having many exams for the upcoming week. :[

but still go ahead and ask me questions because i’ll try my best to answer them during my free time.
