Hello! I am a current 10th grader, who applied to Phillips andover academy for my 11th grade year. I got waitlisted today. Does anyone know how likely it is that someone on the waitlist is accepted? Thanks!
At a school like Andover? Almost impossible to be honest D; (not saying it could not happen)
Thanks for letting me know are there any hard statistics? Such as how many wait list spots usually are accepted, etc? Thanks again
I wouldn’t count on it. This past year, 0 students were taken off the waitlist. Sorry I’m sure there are other great options for you though.
Can someone share the exact words from the wait list letter? I want to see if mine was personalized because I have an inkling that it might have been.
Here’s mine:
Our admission committee has reviewed your application and, at this time, we are unable to offer you a position at Phillips Academy. The committee agreed, however, that given the strength of your candidacy we should postpone final action on your application. With this in mind, we have placed your name on our waiting list.
We sincerely hope you will elect to remain on our waiting list. Please contact our office within a week to confirm your decision. We certainly understand if you decide to make a commitment elsewhere.
The admission committee recognizes your many strengths, yet with so many applicants and so few openings we were forced to make some difficult decisions. We appreciate your continued interest in Andover, and we look forward to hearing from you.

@goldenfygg what grade did you apply for? Maybe there is more likelihood for 9th graders than 11th graders? Best of luck
I applied for 9th grade. And thank you! Good luck to you as well.
If you believe what is posted here it has been years since anyone has come off the Andover waitlist. @ryin19 Did you give any thought to applying as a 10th grader = I know it is too late now. Andover is a very tough place to enter as an 11th grader. They do not provide the same type of support as the do for incoming 9th and 10th graders. My son is a current senior with strong grades and describes the incoming uppers as incredible geniuses who make him feel dumb.
@RedSoxFan18 i did, but ultimately I realized that I didn’t want to repeat a year in high school as well as pay that extra tuition… I guess I might not have done so great if I had been accepted if all of the incoming 11th graders are geniuses lol
So it seems that there are almost no hopes for those in the waiting list Friends, do you think that it will help if we repeat a year. Should we go to a less known school without repeating, or should we repeat to go to a top school? Is it disadvantaged for us in the long run (for college admission) if we repeat a year in high school?
There is a very extensive waitlist thread that you should review:

No; this is not that uncommon
Check out the following thread, and pay particular attention to the posts by @SevenDad

Thanks for digging that thread up skieurope…interestingly, I found this blurb in one of my posts:
“What I think we’d do differently: This may come as a shock to anyone who’s been following our story for the past few years, but I think I’d have my daughter apply to Exeter despite what we felt was a lukewarm visit experience. Here’s why…I think Exeter (and perhaps Andover?) cultivates a more truly intellectual student body than the other schools often named here. Or at least a higher percentage. SevenDaughter is a bit of nerd herself, so perhaps she would have fit in there despite her parents not getting the best vibe from the school.”
Which should placate those Exeter-boosters who thought I was taking a pot-shot at their school recently after the M9 email fiasco.
^^ Well. that would have been me, placated. So, my apologies. In reading for the last couple of years SevenDad’s incredibly helpful posts – truly, the application experience that should be stickied permanently on this site as it answers almost every question and massages every conundrum – I had thought that I had read that SevenDaughter (or a sibling) had been accepted at Exeter and had nonetheless chosen SAS – the point being that being happy and charged up with a school will influence performance and matters more than reputation
