Philosophy at Berkeley

Just got accepted as a phil major at Berkeley BUT I know the rigorousness of the courses in the department and my main goal is to go to an ivy law school...

...I was wondering if anyone knew the average GPA for Philosophy at Berkeley (I heard it's one of the lowest in humanities) and what major has the highest average GPA?

I believe the average GPA for a philosophy major is a 3.1, but don’t quote me lol.

Do you mean the average TRANSFER GPA or the average GPA of philosophy majors already at berkeley?

You can answer your own question pretty quickly at [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/statfinder/default.aspx)

But as I have time on my hands :D… The average UC GPA of a philosophy major transfer student from California (my guesses for you), is 3.4 ish (depending on the year and other factors). I think it’s slightly higher for freshman admits. The average community college GPA of admitted philosophy transfers is 3.6.

3.2 is the commonly cited stat for philosophy, but I think it’s for the phil department, not phil majors. Many non-phil majors take philosophy classes which brings down the average grade the department hands out. Phil classes aren’t graded on a curve, so there shouldn’t be any reason why you shouldn’t do well.

Keep in mind that Berkeley has a very strong philosophy department, especially for logic, which will help you for law school. You’re much better off majoring in philosophy at UCB if you want to go to an ivy law school.
