philosophy at chicago

how is it?

Judging by their course offerings it seems to be of a pretty analytic orientation. There was hardly a continental class to be seen.

my on campus interview was with a recent alum who had studied philosophy. he came up with great counter examples to all of my positions and was very well read, leaving me with a very positive impression of the school's philosophy program. it's just anecdotal evidence, but i think it reflects well on the school...

indytucker, have you had any courses in philosophy?

search google for philosophy gourmet.

i was interested in philosophy at uchicago too and was pleased to see they have a nice place in those rankings

philosophical gourmet seems to be for graduate level study.

Yes, philosophical gourmet is for graduate study. It's done on peer assesment. It indicates only the strength of a school's faculty, not the quality of its undergraduate program.
They have a page that gives advice for selecting an undergraduate program. I liked it, seemed very insightful.

yeah, i've been in theory of knowledge for 2 years (the requisite IB philosophy course)

theory of knowledge is one year at my school. and one horrible year at that. we've learned absolutely nothing. the high school environment is in no way conducive to learning philosophy, laughs. sorry to sound so bitter. i just love the subject and prefer to read up on it on my own....TOK, in my experience, is pure evil. the students at my school would be clueless as to how analytic philosophy differs from continental philosophy....let alone how kant does from jeremy bentham. whatever chicago's orientation, i'm sure i'll appreciate it a lot more than i do TOK.
TOK just gets my blood boiling :} sorry. i resent its influence in my life....
how is it at your school?

id assume that the graduate program would also imply good undergrad?

i mean for the most part the professors are the same, right? and if you got a TA(more likely at other colleges than UofC) they will be coming from a good program and they will have just that more knowledge to pass along.

Yeah there seems to be a lot of bias against any continetnal philosophy written after the 1800s in many philosophy departments. I haven't seen many coursebooks offering extensive continental courses. What a shame. A kid from the Unviersity of Texas who is MAJORING in philosophy didn't even know who Habermas is.

Haberman "Scanners Live in Vain" by Cordwainer Smith ;)

TOK is hardcore awesome. You must have a bad teacher/curriculum or use it as way too much of an EE workshop.
