Hey. Cool. I'll forward this link to my son. He always thought he wanted to major in history or poli sci, but last summer he signed up for a philosophy class --Ethics-- at the local public univ. (They let junior and senior level high school students take classes with instructor approval.) He was just completely taken by it. As a result, this fall and winter quarters he's taken more philosophy classes there. Next fall he'll be a freshman at Amherst, and he's very interested in a philosophy major. I know things change quickly and often for lots of students once they actually get into college, but I think it is really great that philosophy is what has swept him away at the moment. If he stays in that area for his major, at least he'll have company. ;)

One of RU's star departments. At many of the large state schools you can get much smaller classes as a philosophy major and they tend to do well on the graduate school exams. Great if you plan on law school.

"That whole deep existential torment,” she said. “It’s good for getting girlfriends.”

...funny!

The most brilliant boss I ever had was an undergraduate philosophy major.

Thanks I also forward that article to my son. He has decided to double major, math and philosophy (huh?). Knowing him though if he finds out that Philosophy is becoming popular, he won't like it anymore!

I just bought an intro of sorts to cognitive science and the philosophy of mind earlier today (preparing for my philosophy major at Grinnell come Fall).

This makes me really happy! I hope I can contribute to that philosophical journal someday, that definitely sounds fun and rewarding.

our son at RPI as a compsci/cogsci major also became excited about philosophy and added it as a minor to his academic program.

Myself, while I like Aristotilean philo, was less enamored by Mill and Kant. And today about as deep as I get is Epictetus.
