Hey I was wondering if anybody has transferred to Berkeley and took Symbolic Logic over there opposed to their previous school? How was it, would you recommend it??? Also the common application seems to be very small, the prompts are short and the activities have little space. Do colleges look down on the common app, do most people use resumes? Would you do the common app over the school app? Thanks

Hi. I am a philosophy major. Do you mean symbolic logic or intro to logic? Berkeley's "intro to logic" is like "symbolic logic" at a CC. Symbolic Logic at Berkeley has Intro to Logic as a prerequisite.

And what do you mean about the "common app"? What is the school app? What school are you even talking about with these?

I see, so I'll still be taking another symbolic course when I transfer if I take it at my CC? Well the common app is used for applying to multiple schools (out of state of course).

Ok--that's what I thought you were talking about.

If you are talking about Berkeley--does your CC actually have a class that meets the requirements for the Intro to Logic prerequisite? It's very rare among the cccs.

Regardless of whether the course can be transferred, symbolic logic is usually similar across schools.

Well it does meet the pre req I believe. However I'm debating my schedule

taken:
Philosophy 1: Intro to Philosophy Grade A
Philosophy 6: Logic in Practice Grade A
Philosophy 20: Ethics Grade A

Planned:
English 103 Critical Thinking and composition
Philosophy 12 Greek Philosophy
Philosophy 14 History of Modern Philosophy
Philosophy 30 Asian Philosophy
On the fence:
Philosophy 9 Symbolic Logic

the first four work great together in terms of scheduling, if I did not take Symb Log the spring, would it hurt my chances?

my transfer gpa: 3.69 without the fall semester (most likeley will get a 3.8)

Obviously there is a genuine interest in the subject, and the only class articulated is Symb Log, however in order to take Eng 103 (highly recommended prof), I can't take Symb Log. So what would you recommend, do I even have a shot at Berkeley????

What school do you go to?

I looked up those classes and found LA Pierce college. Is this where you go? If so, symbolic logic 9 is not considered to be a major prerequisite for Berkeley.

PHILOS 12A Introduction to Logic (4)|
COURSE(S) DENIED: |PHILOS 9 Symbolic Logic I (3)

And the other classes are not articulated prerequisites. You would have to petition to have them count once you got to the school.

Also, the English is by far more important as it is an IGETC requirement.

I'm actually at LA Valley College. So stick with the English, does that put me in a funny position? Knowing that I can't take the Symb Log? What do you think of the gpa?

Oh--ok so I guess it is articulated then; sorry about that. And yes--if I'm not mistaken can you even transfer if you haven't completed the English course?

GPA is good. You can explain in the essay why you didn't take symb logic--or I guess you submitted already...

If I contact them in the spring when they require us to notify them of the class schedule. I can explain it was unavailable, legit right? Thanks, and yes that is correct about the Eng 103 needed to transfer

Since you already submitted your application, shouldn't you notify the schools you applied to as soon as you make a change to your actual class schedule? Did you register for classes yet? If I were you, I'd wait until my spring schedule is finalized and then send the schools a letter telling them that instead of Symbolic Logic, I'll now be taking English 103.

It won't be a big issue--like I said, a Berk transfer counselor has told me just about no one takes that course at the CC level.

Don't say it was "unavailable" though if it actually was available.

What would I say b/c the only other class offering is at a bad time. I just scored a tutoring/lab assistant for the biology department, so I got a job. Instead of unavailable? I don't have time to take it?

Oh really? The one at GWC transfers...yay? I hope I don't get screwed over in the quality of the material I'll be learning at OCC compared to UCB/UCLA though.

Well, not verbatim of what I said, but I wasn't aware that you had to provide reasons for changes you make after application submittal.

Yes--mention it didn't work out for you because of time issues etc. If you decided to be a philosophy major at some point in your CC time (as opposed to from the beginning) it makes sense.

sarcasmgirl--as I told you before, the symbolic logic course at GWC has been suspended. And OCC has no articulated prereqs.

I posted "How come the guidance counselor at GWC said it would transfer (the OCC Symblic Logic course) and the assist.org also states it will transfer?"

But scratch that, I checked assist.org and have made an ass of myself. :)

Are we still talking about Berkeley?

Check my edited post. :( :( :(

At least it transfers to UCLA, then?

It's not a big deal. Again--they dont expect phil majors to have taken it.
