philosophy major vs. history major

Hey everyone,

I am going into my junior of college. I'm a finance major looking to add a second major in either philosophy or history. I like both subjects very much.

Both require 8 more classes on top of the few I've taken in both. I can complete one of the majors (along with my finance degree) and graduate on time, so that's not a problem.

I may want to go to law school and I understand that law school is mainly concerned with GPA & LSAT, so whatever I major in is not entirely important . I like the flexibility of having a BA in history because it allows for private school teaching, but I also appreciate the development of critical thinking skills found in philosophy.

So! Does anyone have any advice for my selection? Has anyone been in, or known someone in the same boat as myself? Can anyone help me with weighing the pros and cons of both a history major & a philosophy major?

Thanks in advance : )

If it doesn't really matter what second major you'll choose, then pick one that you actually enjoy. When you love a subject, you (usually) do well in it, for you don't view it as a series of tasks and requirements, but as fun things to do. That, in turn, will help you with achieving a high GPA.

History will teach you plenty of critical thinking, by the way. You should know by now that it isn't just memorization and regurgitation. Connecting all the factual and theoretical material learned, and synthesizing it in your head and on paper will help you develop critical reading, thinking and writing skills.

I'd definately go with philosophy (but I am biased, being a prospective philosophy major myself.)

I don't disagree that history will teach you some critical thinking - but in all honesty I believe that philosophy will teach you more. If you are looking at law school, philosophy is probably your best bet.

The choice is yours and ultimately you should decide on a major that best suits your passion. Though a Aze mentioned, philosophy might help sharpen your logic skills.
