Would anyone know anything about the Philosophy program at Rhodes? I've heard that it's sort of a joke major in most college. Although I don't plan on making it my only major, or a major at all, I am very interested in taking its courses and was wondering what people thought of it. Thanks!

I cannot imagine anyone saying that Philosophy is a joke major anywhere. Well, actually I cannot imagine anyone who knows anything about Philosophy saying that.

The Philosophy department at Rhodes is much bigger than you will find at most LACs (and even at many universities) because of the Search and Life curriculum requirements - all students take three semesters of Philosophy or Religion (a few courses in other departments like History count too).

My D is a senior now and she very much enjoyed the Search classes she took. She also took Logic just because she thought it would be interesting (and it was).

Search is not through the Philosophy department. Search is a cross-discipline taught 3-course series. History, political science, philosophy, english/literature, religious studies, etc professors are involved in the Search curriculum.

Last I checked, there are 5-7 Philosophy professors at Rhodes. It is not a very big program but there are some interesting courses that are offered. The courses are very challenging.

Logic counts for the F6 (Math) requirement, hence, many choose to take that route, especially if law school is a possible future route.

The issue with a Philosophy major is the lack of exit opportunities – the market simply does not value it as a discipline that instills valuable skills. This fact as be argued, but there are many more Finance majors being placed in well-paying jobs than Philosophy majors. If some form of graduate school is in your future, then philosophy can be a terrific way to challenge your critical thinking skills and enhance your writing abilities. However, I would not suggest it as an undergraduate major by itself unless graduate school is in the works.
