<p>Why not come at philosphy by way of Intellectual History? This used to be the royal route into the subject by generations of students at Columbia and Chicago. My experience is that unless you can contextualize ideas you cannot really 'read' the original texts. </p>

<p>Anyway, if I was looking for some light summer's reading into philosophy, I would probably start with David Denby 'Great Books" and Jacques Barzun, "From Dawn to Decadence".</p>
